Patron Of NYC Arts Schuyler Garrison Chapin Dies At Age 86

Schuyler Garrison Chapin passed away this past Saturday at age 86. He held positions as assistant general Manager of the Metropolitan Opera as well as the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for NYC.

Chapin was a pilot during WWII and after his return he wed Elizabeth Steinway. 

According to NYTimes.com "Chapin had four sons: Henry of Manhattan, the twins Theodore of Manhattan and Samuel of Hingham, Mass., and Miles of Queens, who survive him, along with eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Chapin married Catia Z. Mortimer in 1995, with Mayor Giuliani officiating. She also survives him."

A long-time friend of Leonard Bernstein, Chapin had a hand in producing the musicians albums.

Chapin was named Vice President Of Lincoln center in 1963. While he was there Chapin oversaw the first two Lincoln Center festivals, in 1967 and 1968. He also helped create the Mostly Mozart series.

Chapin, who never attended college, also held a position as the dean of Columbia University's School of the Arts.

Chapin penned several books, and was awarded a Legion d'honneur honor.
