La 78e cérémonie des Emmy Awards s'est tenue ce soir, le 14 septembre, et plusieurs favoris du théâtre figuraient parmi les lauréats de cette année.
Jean Smart a remporté le prix de la meilleure actrice dans une série comique pour Hacks, marquant sa cinquième victoire consécutive pour la série. Avec cette victoire, Smart est devenue la première interprète à remporter un Emmy d'interprétation pour chaque saison d'une série télévisée. Jean Smart a été vue récemment à Broadway la saison dernière dans Call Me Izzy. Elle a reçu une nomination aux Tony Awards pour la reprise de 2000 de The Man Who Came to Dinner et a fait ses débuts à Broadway dans Piaf en 1981.
L'acteur de théâtre et cinéma Matthew Rhys a également marqué l'histoire en devenant le premier interprète à remporter deux Emmy Awards de meilleur acteur principal en une seule année, décrochant le prix de meilleur acteur dans une série comique pour Widow's Bay ainsi que celui de meilleur acteur dans une mini-série ou anthologie pour The Beast in Me. Rhys a fait ses débuts sur scène à New York avec la reprise Off-Broadway de 2012 par Roundabout Theatre Company de Look Back in Anger et reviendra sur scène à New York en 2027 en incarnant Richard Burton dans Playing Burton au Lincoln Center Theater.
La vétérante de Broadway Allison Janney a remporté le prix de la meilleure actrice dans un second rôle dans une série dramatique pour The Diplomat. Nommée deux fois aux Tony Awards, les crédits Broadway de Janney incluent Present Laughter, A View from the Bridge, 9 to 5, Six Degrees of Separation ainsi que la prochaine reprise de la pièce acclamée Other Desert Cities.
Parmi les autres grands gagnants figuraient The Pitt pour la meilleure série dramatique, Widow's Bay pour la meilleure série comique et DTF St. Louis pour la meilleure mini-série ou série anthologique.
