Die 78. Emmy Awards wurden heute Abend, am 14. September, verliehen, und mehrere Favoriten aus dem Theater waren unter den diesjährigen Gewinnern.
Jean Smart erhielt die Auszeichnung als Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series für Hacks, was ihren fünften Sieg in Folge für die Serie bedeutet. Mit diesem Erfolg wurde Smart die erste Darstellerin, die für jede Staffel einer Fernsehserie einen Emmy für eine schauspielerische Leistung gewann. Zuletzt war Smart in der letzten Saison am Broadway in Call Me Izzy zu sehen. Für die Revival-Produktion von The Man Who Came to Dinner im Jahr 2000 wurde sie für einen Tony Award nominiert und debütierte 1981 am Broadway in Piaf.
Bühnen- und Filmschauspieler Matthew Rhys schrieb ebenfalls Geschichte, indem er als erster Darsteller in einem Jahr zwei Lead-Emmys gewann: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series für Widow's Bay und Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie für The Beast in Me. Rhys gab sein New Yorker Theaterdebüt 2012 in der Off-Broadway-Aufführung von Look Back in Anger mit der Roundabout Theatre Company und wird 2027 als Richard Burton in Playing Burton am Lincoln Center Theater zurückkehren.
Broadway-Veteranin Allison Janney gewann die Auszeichnung als Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series für The Diplomat. Janney, die zweimal für einen Tony Award nominiert wurde, hat Broadway-Credits in Present Laughter, A View from the Bridge, 9 to 5, Six Degrees of Separation sowie das bevorstehende Revival des vielbeachteten Stücks Other Desert Cities.
Weitere Hauptgewinner waren The Pitt als Outstanding Drama Series, Widow's Bay als Outstanding Comedy Series und DTF St. Louis als Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Die 78. Emmy Awards fanden über drei Nächte am 5., 6. und 14. September statt. Die Zeremonie am 14. September wurde von Mariska Hargitay moderiert und live auf NBC aus dem Peacock Theater im L.A. LIVE übertragen.
