Road Show - 1987 Off-Broadway History , Info & More

Circle Repertory Theatre
99 7th Avenue South New York, NY 10014

From the team that brought us Assassins and Pacific Overtures, Road Show is based on the true story of the Mizner Brothers. Featuring Obie-winning music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and an intricately written book by John Weidman, the piece ran at The Public Theatre in 2008 after being developed at the New York Theatre Workshop and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in its previous incarnations.

From the Alaskan Gold Rush in the 1890s to the Florida real estate boom in the 1930s, Road Show is the story of men and women in late nineteenth century America, willing to take risks to grab their piece of the American Dream. Spanning 40 years, Road Show specifically focuses on Addison and Wilson Mizner, two brothers who are constantly looking for the next way to strike it rich. This quest turns into a test of morality and judgment for the two brothers that will change their lives in unexpected ways.

The latest offering from American musical theater staple, Stephen Sondheim, Road Show features a medium-sized cast with strong, complex roles for a variety of types. This tale of dreamers who scramble for success, identity and love at the turn of the twentieth century will strike a chord with audiences looking for a skillfully written, intelligent piece of musical theatre history.

Review: EVERYTHING, DEVOURED at Sitar Arts Center
by Aidan O'Connor - Apr 19, 2026

Picture former United States President Ronald Reagan as a demon drag queen summoned to the Chicago apartment of a group of twenty somethings. A bit bizarre to think about. On paper, the far-fetched, extraordinarily unique pitch shouldn’t work. Yet, in the world premiere production of Everything, Devoured, playwright Katherine Gwynn has created a superbly demonic play rooted in pure humanity.

Review: You'll Love Keeping MISERY Company at B St. Theatre
by Courtney Symes - Feb 3, 2026

The B St. Theatre is kicking off its 40th anniversary season with an ambitious piece, and if you’ve never seen a show there, you should make this current production your first. You’ll become their number one fan, just like Annie Wilkes in this adaptation of Stephen King’s 1987 novel, Misery. William Goldman, who adapted both the film and stage versions, appreciated the story’s psychological battle, which is brought to life with suspense and unexpected humor under John Lamb’s direction.

Review: Play It Again, Orpheus! HADESTOWN at Dr. Phillips Center For The Performing Arts
by Albert Gutierrez - Nov 29, 2025

This new approach to the storytelling of Hadestown helped make me appreciate some of the compromises on the tour. And to further appreciate what they still maintained from the first tour and Broadway production. The set’s slightly modified (Hades’ door is more centered, for one), but we get to keep the band onstage. We get that dingy café feeling through the layout. We hold on to the iconic props – the rose, the candle, the guitar, the lamps – as well as the steampunk design of the costumes. The Workers are still a core five that inhabit both worlds and create their own, unspoken storylines through their movement and couplings. And the characters themselves are still the same, timeless figures that make Hadestown always feel like a new experience every time.
