Rise and shine, BroadwayWorld! It is September 13, 2023 and it's time to catch up on all of the theatrical happenings you may have missed in the last 24 hours.

In May December, Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), a popular television star, has arrived in a tight-knit island community in Savannah. Here, she will be doing intimate research for a new part, ingratiating herself into the lives of Gracie (Julianne Moore), whom she’ll be playing on-screen, and her much younger husband, Joe (Charles Melton).

In this edition, we delve into the passionate efforts of America's playwrights to save the Tony Awards, the rebound of orchestras with growing audience numbers. We also explore the success of the 2022-2023 Broadway season, recent appointments and collaborations within the theater community.

The Tony Awards are less than two weeks away and there are still many unanswered questions. The most important is likely—who is going to win? That is of course always an unanswered question until the names are announced, but usually at least one of the major races has a clear-cut favorite.

The new West End production of Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical magnum opus Long Day's Journey into Night led by Emmy-winner Brian Cox has added Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects) and more to its cast.

This new wave comes with artist contributions from Johanna and Klara Söderberg of First Aid Kit (“JeJune Stars,” “Coatcheck Dream Song,” “Wrecking Ball”), Gillian Welch (“Napolean’s Hat”) and Alynda Segarra of Hurray for the Riff Raff (“Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed),” “Firewall,” ‘When You Were Mine”).

The DOWNTOWN URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL will present 16 plays (nine shorts and seven one-acts.) The festival kicks off on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 when Savion Glover and Reg E. Gaines (Bring in da Noise Bring in da Funk) make a much-anticipated return to The Public Theater with the centerpiece production If Trane Wuz Here.

As public booking opens, the Menier Chocolate Factory has announced the full casting for the UK première of Jordan Harrison's Marjorie Prime.

Michael Buchanan and Todd Buonopane opened SONGS THAT MADE US GAY to an at-capacity room at The Green Room 42, so an encore performance was pretty much essential. Now it's a reality.

Poet Voice Sucks, a funny poetry series featuring humorous poetry performed by writers, comedians, and actors, returns for its fourth edition at the Broadway Comedy Club on December 18th.

The Green Room 42 will present Todd Buonopane & Michael Buchanan in SONGS THAT MADE US GAY on November 20th at 9:30pm. The show will be live in person or streaming for 24 hours.

The Green Room 42 has announced its November line-up for in-person cabaret performances. The lineup will feature James Jackson, Jr., Jon-Michael Reese, Natalie Joy Johnson, and more.

MCC Theater will produce a four-week development workshop of a new musical, Hearts Beat Loud, to be presented on February 9 & 10, 2023. Hearts Beat Loud is based on the inspiring 2018 indie film set in Red Hook (starring Nick Offerman and Toni Collette).

Casting has been announced for Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ WORLD PREMIERE production of INVINCIBLE - THE MUSICAL, featuring the music of PAT BENATAR & NEIL GIRALDO, from November 22 to December 18, 2022, in The Wallis’ Bram Goldsmith Theater.
