Some may doubt that a stage adaptation of the terrifically inventive, romantic, and witty 1998 film, 'Shakespeare in Love,' could possibly succeed. However, Connecticut Repertory Theatre's current production, expertly directed by Vincent Tycer and acted by a vibrant, masterful cast, proves that setting this story--which is about theater, after all--in an actual theater, creates a magic all its own. This production is, without a doubt, 'a hit! a palpable hit!'

William Shakespeare's rollicking and ever-popular comedy of mistaken identity, TWELFTH NIGHT, brings its magical combination of mischief, madness and romance into the outdoor amphitheater at Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum this summer where it plays in rep through September 28. Written in 1601 and first seen in the Inns of Court shortly after Christmas (hence, the title), the holiday was celebrated as a festival during which everything was made delightfully topsy-turvy, much like the world of the play's Illyria. And you could not ask for a more ideal cast of characters to bring The Bard's non-stop, high energy hijinks to life.

Written by William Shakespeare, the dark comedy tells the story of unrequited love, mistaken identity, the idea of madness, trickery, adventure and the extraordinary things that love can make us do. Admittedly, the narrative of Twelfth Night can be hard to follow for those that aren't familiar with the piece or Shakespeare's obsession with subplots, which are all magically woven together and tied with a bow at the end. The plot unfolds with a shipwreck which separates Viola from her twin before, who in order to survive in the foreign land of Illyria, disguises herself as a boy and works as a page to Duke Orsino. Not long into the plot there is a love triangle between the Countess Oliva who has fallen in love with Cesario/Viola, Cesario/Viola who has fallen in love with Orsino and Orisino who is courting Olivia. Meanwhile Olivia's uncle Sir Toby Belch, his friend Sir Andrew Agruecheek and servant Maria formulate a drunkard plan to reveal the aspirations and self-love of Olivia's head steward Marvolio (who's now a woman called Malvolia), who disapproves of their frequent partying ordeals. Hence, they forge a letter from Olivia's hand to Marvolio, tricking him into believing that the countess is head over his heels from him. And while all this is happening, you find out that Sebastian (Viola's twin) did not die but like his sister, has survived the shipwreck and is making his way toward the palace with his companion Antonio, a noble prince, in two.

I'm prepared to lose friends as I type this, but I'm actually not a huge of Will S. Perhaps attending a Shakespeare camp in my youth would've lead me in a different path, but in the past I'd spend so much time sifting through and interpreting the language, that the overall impact of the story was lost.
However, this production seemed covertly aimed at changing my mind.

Folger Theatre's TWELFTH NIGHT is simply perfection. A complete triumph, TWELFTH NIGHT, directed by Robert Richmond, is a clear, funny and touching rendering of a Shakespeare play that can appeal to any theatre-goer. After their sell-out production of HENRY V, which received all sorts of accolades, Folger may have topped itself. TWELFTH NIGHT is one you don't want to miss.
