Tapestry Dance Company presents the premiere of TIME

(Austin, TX) – Tapestry Dance Company, North America’s only repertory tap dance company presents the premiere of Acia Gray’s TIME – A Journey Toward Present Grace.

“It's been a few seasons since Tapestry Dance Company has tackled a premiere that deals with a topic other than an historical perspective or tribute to the incredible history and legacy of tap dance. With "The Souls of Our Feet"" and "April Fools" being two of those critically acclaimed and successful examples, returning to my love of contemporary and theatrical work has been a wonderful journey over the last few weeks. This ensemble creation shows a beautiful diversity to the company that is rarely seen in performance. I'm honored to have such a creative "team" in place to play with. I can't wait to witness the final product on opening night” –Acia Gray, Artistic Director

Working in a collaborative playground with the dancers of Tapestry, this new work "Time" presents a rhythm journey based on a concept and definition of "the manmade illusion of control we call time."

Where have we been, what are we doing, where are we going, and how do we get there? - are just some of the questions that have brought unique rhythmic responses not only from the pallet of director/choreographer Acia Gray but some of the best young tap dancers on the international stage today – the members of Tapestry Dance Company. Not only are these artists presenting new ensemble work within the entire evening but their own comedic as well as poignant choreography all responding to the challenge of the definition of time.

Long Center Resident Company, Tapestry is a professional, non-profit dance organization founded in 1989 for the purpose of developing a foundation in multi-form dance performance and education and is home to the only repertory tap dance company in North America. Its expansive south Austin, TX facility is home to seven resident artists, an annual tap dance festival, educational outreach programs, and a pre-professional and adult training facility sharing the unique training syllabus of founders Acia Gray and Deirdre Strand.

BWW Review: AGAINST, Almeida Theatre
by Marianka Swain - Aug 19, 2017

The incident tent, the police tape: a sickeningly familiar sight, made fresh yet again by the tragic events of this week. But that very familiarity, and the tendency of one event to be swiftly superseded by another in the public consciousness, is a major issue tackled by Christopher Shinn's ambitious new epic. What is at the root of violence, and if we never stop to address that, how can humanity ever hope for a better future? (more...)

BWW Review: The Theoretical Existence that is Nu•ance Theatre Co.'s PROOF
by Kristen Morale - Aug 19, 2017

Now being performed by the Nu•ance Theatre Co. (in association with John DeSotelle Studio) and under the direction of John DeSotelle, Proof is the Pulitzer-Prize winning play by David Auburn that provides audiences with much to think about…even if we understand little of the actual theorems themselves. This entire show is wonderful in that it equates the universality of math with the very specifics of how people live their lives - simple numbers that take the place of human emotions to the point where people are trying to prove theorems over love - trying to make equations work over how they should be functioning. It is a play that not only seeks to prove an equation that can exist as perfect, but also proves how imperfect we are in the face of ourselves and others. It is the perfect theoretical to what reality has given to these characters, and what ensues cannot be witnessed with anything less than pure fascination. (more...)

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Aug 19, 2017

The memories are in the music, and Maine State Music Theatre and Portland Stage's latest co-production struts, sizzles smiles, and sparkles with energy and latent emotion. Classy, funny, lively, touching, vocally and instrumentally beautiful, this tightly constructed revue, The All Night Strut, offers a journey to an era where the world was in turmoil, Time moved more slowly, hearts were worn on sleeves, and swing was the thing. Performed in a stylish production with a quartet of stunning soloists and a trio of fine musicians, this soundtrack of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s tells its story in song and dance and offers theatre-goers a wholly satisfying and warmly memorable experience. Sun Valley Center to Host Solar Eclipse Lecture
by BWW News Desk - Aug 18, 2017

Eclipses of the Sun happen when the Moon blocks the Sun's light from our view. It may seem puzzling, then, that solar physicists flock to study the Sun during these special events. Shouldn't there be nothing to see? Yet there is. In this lecture, Dr. Olsten will talk about what the tantalizing solar features revealed during solar eclipses tell us about the Sun and its structure, as well as how this relates to what high energy solar satellites routinely discover without the need for eclipses. The discussion will then make a leap into the cosmos to relate this to what astronomers are learning about the nearest stars and their abilities to make good homes for other planets. (more...)
