Detroit Fringe Festival Kicks Off Next Week

CMAP (Carrie Morris Arts Production) has announced the return of the much anticipated 'Detroit Fringe Festival'. Now in its sixth year, this grassroots performing arts festival has featured the work of over 200 artists, highlighting new and work-in-progress creations from Michigan playwrights and performers. Spanning 4-days at different venues in Detroit and Hamtramck this year's Fest runs Thursday to Sunday, September 19 a?" 22.

The Washington Stage Guild returns to the Nobel Prize-winning George Bernard Shaw, with a new production of the first play by GBS ever presented by the Stage Guild, Candida. Subtitled a?oeA Mystery,a?? in it, a preacher and a poet are in love with the same woman. The former is her husband, the latter wants to woo her away, and both are shocked by her ultimate choice and the reasons for it.

Carrie a?" The Musical was the final production of this year's graduating class of the Stage School in Hamburg. Felix Löwy and Lauren Slater-Klein directed the show. It was produced by Thomes Gehle and performed 40 times this July and August at the First Stage Theatre. The musical's book is by Lawrence D. Cohen, with lyrics by Dean Pitchford and music by Michael Gore. The story is based on Stephen King's novel Carrie, published in 1974. It is about a teenage girl who is raised by her religious fanatic mother. Bullied at school and oppressed by her classmates, she unleashes telekinetic powers which lead to a fatal climax at the school's prom night.

Musicals at Richter (MAR), celebrating 35 seasons as the longest-running outdoor theater in Connecticut, continues its main stage season with 'Shrek the Musical,' a hilarious fairy tale adventure based on the beloved animated film and children's book, playing July 26 to August 10. Staged on the grounds of the Richter House Arts Center, 100 Aunt Hack Road, in Danbury, performances take place outdoors under the stars Friday through Sunday evenings, with additional specially discounted performances on Thursday August 1 and 8.

Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters. The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite his mother's protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about himself, the little fowl finds himself on an adventure of self-discovery, all the while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry Cat. Along the way, Ugly meets a whole flock of unique characters and finds out being different is not a bad thing to be.
