Rising Somali-Canadian R&B artist, Amaal, releases her new single, 'Coming and Going,' today. 'Coming and Going' is a silky, lustrous number about how the experience of being in love. The track muses on the highs and lows, acknowledging that the bad often doesn't negate the good in a relationship. Speaking on the track's inspiration, Amaal shared, 'Coming and Going was inspired by a relationship that had no defining status. I think a lot of us have been in situations where we should leave but it feels so good to stay.'

Four of the eight authors of the newly released book Seven Sisters and A Brother: Untold Truths Behind Black Student Activism in the 1960s will be in conversation on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at the 92nd Street Y (1395 Lexington Avenue, New York City) at 7 pm. Authors Marilyn Allman Maye, Harold S. Buchanan, Jannette O. Domingo, and Marilyn Holifield will discuss their experiences in the 1960s as activists at an elite liberal arts college, in a spirited discussion moderated by New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning opinion editor, Brent Staples. The book takes you on a journey through their inspiring group narrative, which includes the peaceful eight-day sit-in they organized at Swarthmore College in 1969.

Second Thought Theatre closes their 2019 season with the world premiere of What We Were by acclaimed local playwright Blake Hackler. This is the third world premiere of Hackler's plays presented by Second Thought, following successful runs in previous seasons of The Necessities and Enemies/People. It also marks the first co-production for the company with another theatre. Directed by STT Artistic Associate Christie Vela, What We Were tells the story of three sisters who suffered a childhood of abuse. Weaving scenes from the past and present, the play explores responsibility, what we do to cope, and the very difficult work of healing. What We Were begins with previews on Wednesday, August 28 and runs through Saturday, September 21. Performances of What We Were will take place at Bryant Hall on the Kalita Humphreys Campus; 3400 Blackburn Avenue before transferring to Circle Theatre in Fort Worth. Rising Somali-Canadian artist, Amaal, returns today with the music video for her most recent single, 'Coming and Going.' Directed by Kat Webber, who's best known for directing videos for SZA's 'Garden' and Drake's 'Nice For What,' the dream like visual stars Amaal as she cycles through her day reflecting on the impermanence of love and life. Filmed at a sundrenched home in the hills, the visual is a meditation on transience and seeks to flip the traditional response towards the inevitable passing of things from one of mourning to one of acceptance.
