What did our critic think of THE BODYGUARD at John W. Engeman Theater?

Dear Readers, “Grease” may be the word at Village Theatre right now, but don’t expect to hear that song from the movie, as the movie does stray from the original stage show from Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. But we’ll get into that in a bit.

​There aren’t many times in your life where you can safely say you’ve watched a lip-sync routine to a song about being on Jobseeker’s Allowance, all the while having just watched a clown piece seemingly about how Year 7’s always have backpacks larger than them. However, Long Night Production’s Chaos III brought audiences of The Pleasance Theatre exactly that last night, in a two-and-a-half-hour piece showcasing some new emerging talent, and a whole load of unexpected twists and turns.

Mount Vernon Arts Consortium presented the one and only Patrick Warburton for a night of stand-up comedy at the historic Knox Memorial Theater. With the 250th birthday of our nation approaching this July 4th, Ford’s Theatre’s current attraction, the musical that tells the how the Declaration of Independence came to be, 1776 is indeed the best choice for this historic theatre to be presenting for the occasion. With a score by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, 1776 ranks in my opinion as a perfect musical and there are only a handful of those.

What did our critic think of SUFFS at Emerson Colonial Theatre?

The Candlelight® concert series is a special treat for music lovers of all ages and varying music tastes. The concert took place in an ecclesiological Gothic Revival style church built in 1911 - 1912 with a behemoth organ at its centre. The architectural grandeur of the vast sanctuary enhances the natural acoustics of the string quartet, the vaulted ceilings allowing for longer reverberation times. With thousands of candles delicately placed throughout the space, the ambience was surreal as night fell upon us.

The touring production took a while to find its musical footing but eventually found its diva swagger.

Despite the odds being stacked against them, this Florida-based student theater company stages Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a profound expression of queer resilience and joy.
