Enraptured after attending Broadway's then toast of the town, The 5th Dimension put together 'Aquarius' from HAIR with 'Let the Sunshine In' and the rest was chart-topping history. Spending six straight weeks at number one in the spring of '69, the medley became an ultimate, uplifting anthem for a generation. The story behind this mega hit is told in LaMonte McLemore's heartwarming new memoir 'From Hobo Flats to The 5th Dimension,' available now on Amazon.

On January 17, 2020, Los Angeles Opera presented Stefano Landi's 1619 opera, The Death of Orpheus, (La Morte d'Orfeo) at El Cid, a performance space usually known for dinner theater. Landi may have written his own libretto. In any case, the story of the five-act opera was inspired by Angelo Poliziano's 1484 pastoral tragicomedy La Favola d'Orfeo.

The opening night audience for YENTL failed to give the standard Cleveland standing ovation. This might be construed as an omen that there was a disconnect between the viewers and the production. It's too bad. YENTL is an important script, which tells a fascinating story of a writer, ahead of his time, who weaves Jewish history with modern issues. I wanted so much to really be swept away by the production. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

In February 2012, we hosted playwright Motti Lerner for a workshop of At Night's End, a politically charged family drama that takes place during the Second Lebanon War, and we are thrilled to have him back this upcoming February. We are equally excited to welcome back OBIE-award-winner Melia Bensussen to direct local favorites Dakota Shepard and Mark Cohen in this 'fiercely romantic drama' between an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman and her ex-husband who left her while leaving his faith.

Musical Theatre West's entertaining, high-energy new production of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN---which continues performances at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach through April 14, 2019---is, for the most part, a sleek, stylish, and abundantly entertaining piece of theater, filled with nostalgic fun and features a plucky anti-hero at its center whose bad behavior can both be seen as terrible and worth cheering for in his sheer audacity and skill. Despite its flaws, the show is a worthy trip back in time, especially with the presence of its two terrific lead actors Jacob Haren and Jeff Skowron as the teenage con artist and the FBI agent chasing him.

Next Theatre Company and Artistic Director Jason Southerland are thrilled to announce the 30th anniversary season, a year dedicated to plays that explore the myths that men and women create about their lives. The season opens in the fall with a world premiere presented at the National New Play Network's annual showcase. It continues with the regional premiere of a play Southerland first read when he met with Israeli playwright Motti Lerner (Pangs of the Messiah) in Tel Aviv earlier this year. The season comes to its climactic end with a pair of plays by Phyllis Nagy (pronounced 'Naij') who has captured wide acclaim in the United Kingdom but has been rarely produced in the U.S.
