Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Closing: September 03, 2006

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - 2005 Broadway History , Info & More

The French Riviera shimmers with laughter and high jinks in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," a musical brimming with infectious tunes and witty lyrics. Sophisticated conman Lawrence Jameson, accustomed to charming wealthy women out of their fortunes, clashes with Freddy Benson, a brash American who cons women with sob stories. Their uneasy coexistence in this lucrative territory leads to a winner-take-all bet: whoever cons Christine Colgate, a young heiress, out of $50,000 first gets to stay. Hilarious chaos ensues as Lawrence and Freddy deploy their best (and worst) con artistry, with romantic entanglements and unexpected twists blurring the lines between genuine connection and elaborate schemes.

This Tony Award-nominated musical, with music by David Yazbek and lyrics by David Bryan, is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Notable songs like "Give Them What They Want" and "People Like Us" capture the humor and charm of the story.

Review: DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS at Seacoast Repertory Theatre
by Dan Marois - Mar 15, 2026

There’s one thing that the Seacoast Repertory Theatre knows how to do very well. It’s transforming their intimate, brick-walled space in Portsmouth into a world that feels ten times its actual size. Their current production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels—the 2005 musical based on the Steve Martin/Michael Caine film—is a fun, high-energy farce, delivering a cocktail of sophisticated wit and unapologetically lowbrow humor that pleases like a French martini.

Review: DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS at the Stratford Festival is a Hilarious Romp
by Lauren Gienow - May 30, 2025

Last night, Director Tracey Flye’s production of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS opened at the Stratford Festival’s Avon Theatre. One of two musicals mounted at the Festival this season, this production is paired well with its counterpart, ANNIE. As musical comedies go, they simply could not be more different from one another tonally. Patrons who are seeking something edgier or who perhaps have a more cynical outlook on life than optimistic Annie, will enjoy the hijinks of Lawrence and Freddy. I personally suggest seeing both musicals though. After all, as is evidenced in this production, we all contain multitudes.
