Atlanta Opera Celebrates Record-Breaking 2018-19 Season

The Atlanta Opera broke new records this season. Even before its final presentation Francesca Zambello's new take on La traviata, which closed this past weekend 2018-19 was already guaranteed to be the company's highest-grossing season of the past decade, highlighted by last fall's West Side Story, the highest-selling production in the Atlanta Opera's 39-year history (Opera News).

Charles Mingus Awareness Project Comes to Firehouse

Since 2007, drummer/composer Brian Jones has been presenting Mingus Awareness Project concerts in Richmond. This year's concert will take place on Sun, June 9 @ 7pm at Firehouse Theatre, 1609 W. Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220. Tickets are $15 in advance / $20 day of / $10 students, with all proceeds going to the ALS Foundation. Purchase College Announces Speakers For 2019 Commencement

Purchase College, SUNY will hold its 47th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, NY.  Degrees will be conferred upon more than 1,000 graduating scholars representing dozens of majors and several countries.

'A Tale Of Two Emigrés With James Conlon' Features Members Of LA Opera Orch From Pittance Chamber Music

Pittance Chamber Music, known for featuring the extraordinary resident artists of the Los Angeles Opera pit and stage, presents A Tale of Two Emigres with James Conlon. LA Opera Music Director James Conlon curates and conducts a unique program that tells the tale of Jewish emigre composers Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Arnold Schoenberg, who left their homelands and ultimately settled in Los Angeles as a result of the Nazis' rise to power. The program will include a talk by Maestro Conlon, who will also conduct works by Korngold and Schoenberg performed by a large ensemble from the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. The concert takes place at Zipper Hall, Colburn School in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.

The innovative new-music ensemble The International Street Cannibals (ISC) presents Schoenberg DNA a concert of vocal and chamber works featuring the brilliant duo of pianist Conor Hanick and soprano Ariadne Greif, with award-winning violinist Anna Tsukervanik. Centered around Schoenberg's radical musical ideas, the program will trace an evolutionary trajectory starting from Beethoven and Schumann, to Alma Maria Schindler-Mahler, to the Second Viennese School with Alban Berg and Anton Webern, all the way to the music of the great Hungarian composer Gy rgy Kurtag. Hanick and Greif will traverse a repertoire of art songs spanning from 1825 to 1908, and Tsukervanik will join Hanick to perform works for violin and piano by Webern and Kurt g. The concert is presented by The International Street Cannibals (ISC) and is a creation of Ariadne Greif, Conor Hanick, and ISC's founder/director Dan Barrett.

After hosting the World Premiere in 2007, Village Theatre is ecstatic to mount an all-new production of Million Dollar Quartet complete with a rock star team of professionals from around the country. The blockbuster hit story of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins is set to run in Issaquah May 9 - June 23, 2019 before moving to Everett June 28 - July 28, 2019.

Asolo Repertory Theatre proudly continues its 60th season with SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It will be directed and choreographed by Peter Rothstein, who helmed the theatre's critically acclaimed 2018 production of Ragtime. Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, a book by Hugh Wheeler and from an adaptation by Christopher Bond, this musical masterwork and global phenomenon previews May 1 - 3, opens May 4 and runs through June 1 in the Mertz Theatre, located in the FSU Center for the Performing Arts.

BRONCO BILLY Comes to Skylight Theatre

Skylight Theatre Company (Producing Artistic Director, Gary Grossman and Co-Artistic Director Tony Abatemarco) announced today the world premiere of BRONCO BILLY - THE MUSICAL, It marks the organization's first world premiere musical production. The new musical, based on the Warner Bros. film Bronco Billy, features a book by Dennis Hackin, lyrics and music by Chip Rosenbloom and John Torres, with additional lyrics by Michele Brourman. Hunter Bird will direct. Preview performances begin on May 10, with the official press opening on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Art Institute of Chicago Presents New Exhibition 'The People Shall Govern!'

Formed in 1979, Medu Art Ensemble organized a front of cultural and artistic resistance to South Africa's apartheid policy of racial discrimination. Medu means 'roots' in the Sepedi language. As their name suggests, the collective operated underground, drawing exiled South African and international visual, music, and literary artists to work across the South African border in Gaborone, Botswana. At its height, the Medu collective numbered more than 50 members.
