Thoroughly Modern Millie - 2002 - Broadway History , Info & More

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a delightful musical bursting with flapper energy, penned by a team ready to make you smile. Jeanine Tesori composed the music, filled with catchy jazz and ragtime tunes, while Dick Scanlan provided the witty lyrics. Richard Morris and Scanlan collaborated on the book, or script, bringing the story to life. The musical premiered in 2000, based on the 1967 film of the same name, and quickly garnered a bevy of awards.

The story whisks you back to the roaring twenties, 1922 New York City, to be exact. Millie Dillmount, a determined young woman from Kansas, arrives with dreams of a glamorous, modern life. Her plan? Snag a wealthy husband by working as a secretary. But hilarious chaos ensues – she loses her belongings, ends up at a suspicious hotel with a white slavery ring lurking beneath the surface, and falls for a charming man who might not be all he seems.

Thoroughly Modern Millie's infectious energy and clever humor were recognized at the prestigious Tony Awards. It triumphed in 2002, winning six awards including the coveted Best Musical. With its high-kicking dance numbers, unforgettable characters, and a timeless message of female empowerment, Thoroughly Modern Millie remains a crowd-pleasing favorite.
