A schoolroom full of MATILDA's 'Revolting Children' may hit movie theaters as early as 2018 according to the show's composer, Tim Minchin.

The Tony Award® winning MATILDA THE MUSICAL will close on January 1, 2017, it was announced today. By then, it will have played 37 previews, 1,555 regular performances, and one Actors Fund performance. The production opened on April 11, 2013 (previews began March 4) at the Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th Street). MATILDA THE MUSICAL has paid back its $16 million investment on Broadway, making the show a rare hit simultaneously on Broadway and in London's West End.

 MATILDA just celebrated its 1000th performance with who else, but creator Tim Minchin, for a special conversation at New World Stages. At the special event, Jessica Shaw of EW moderated a Q&A and Minchin performed a few Matilda tunes at the piano. BroadwayWorld was there for the special night and you can check out photos below!

Beginning September 8, the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit MATILDA THE MUSICAL will welcome Natalie Venetia Belcon as Mrs. Phelps, Allison Case as Miss Honey, Rick Holmes as Mr. Wormwood, and Amy Spanger as Mrs. Wormwood. They join a principal cast that features Christopher Sieber as Miss Trunchbull, and the four girls sharing the title role: Mattea Conforti, Rileigh McDonald, Mimi Ryder, and Alexandra Vlachos.

Lesli Margherita -- Matilda the Musical's long-running 'Mrs. Wormwood' -- will play her final performance in the Broadway show today, Sept. 6.
