Seattle Center Festál: Dia de Muertos To Be Held 10/29

By: Oct. 19, 2011

Seattle Center Festál: Dia de Muertos - A Mexican Celebration to Remember Our Departed offers exploration and insights into the culture of Mexico through this celebration of remembrance for the deceased, Oct. 29 - 30, 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday; and 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday, in Center House.

This has been a difficult year for many in the world given the natural disasters, civil conflicts, human tragedies and personal loss. Dia de Muertos is a time for us to come together and celebrate loved ones as well as our ancestors.

Decorate sugar skulls and paper skeletons and marigold flowers, explore community altars and join in a candle-lit procession to remember the dead. The celebration keeps ancient Mexican culture alive in monumental traditional sand painting, art exhibits, dance and music performances, short films, special foods, face painting and exquisite rituals.

Everyone is invited to bring photos, flowers, notes and other items to display in the community altar on the Center House Floor to remember your loved ones.

There will be two rooms of altars and ofrendas, some representing different regions of Mexico, some created by local school groups, others honoring those who have died in recent catastrophes. There will be a traditional pantheon display transporting festival goers to Mexico. The festival commences with a pre-hispanic ritual dance to ceremoniously open the celebration, followed by music, storytelling and poetry performances - all in honor of those who have passed away.

The 21 Seattle Center Festál cultural celebrations highlight The Common forms of tradition and expression among ethnic communities in the Pacific Northwest, while underscoring their unique creative contributions, customs, foods and ideals. Each event offers moving entertainment and fascinating insight into a different culture of the world.

Seattle Center Festál: Dia de Muertos - A Mexican Celebration to Remember Our Departed is presented by Seattle Center in partnership with the Taller Mexicano para la Cultura y las Artes.
