BWW Review: MASS APPEALs at 2nd Story
by Larry O'Brien - March 24, 2016
2nd Story Theatre in Warren is on a pretty good run in 2016: HYSTERIA, LOVE DEATH AND WHAT I WORE, and now MASS APPEAL by Bill C. Davis, playing Upstage until April 3, have each provided entertaining and interesting evening or afternoons for their audiences. This play premiered in 1981-about halfway between Going My Way and Spotlight. That seems right: the show does not portray priests as saints, and only hints at the existence of problems, that will be revealed later on. In ninety minutes, MASS APPEAL tells the story of Father Tim Farley (Bob Colonna), a Catholic parish priest whose comfortable existence is upset by the arrival of an idealistic young seminarian, Mark Dolson (David Sackal), who becomes Fr. Farley's charge and challenge. Father Tim Farley is highly popular with his parishioners due to his charm, wit, easy-going manner, and entertaining (but unchallenging) sermons. One Sunday Dolson interrupts Farley's 'dialogue' sermon to challenge his stance on the ordination of women. In fairness to the young man, Fr. Farley had invited questions but got more than he asked for from Dolson. The pastor is outraged yet intrigued by Dolson, and asks to have him assigned to work with him. And that, as Rick tells Captain Renaud in Casablanca, is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

BWW Review: Tepid THE SOUND OF MUSIC at PPAC
by Andria Tieman - March 10, 2016
THE SOUND OF MUSIC, the classic tale of love, music and Nazis is having its 50 year anniversary, and while it's very exciting to see this much-loved production back on the road, there are quite a few hiccups that make this production a little underwhelming to watch.  Despite amazing vocal talents among the cast, and the adorable pack of Von Trapp children, the distinct lack of chemistry between Captain Von Trapp and Maria, and Leisl and Rolf sucks a lot of the much-needed tension out of the story and leaves us with a story that's very nice, but not very compelling.
BWW Review: Wilbury Theatre Group's Hyper-Local INVISIBLE UPSOUTH
by Andria Tieman - March 09, 2016
Stories of police brutality are all over the news these days, but they may still seem like something that happens “elsewhere”. In INVISIBLE UPSOUTH, Wilbury Theatre Company's latest in their New Works program, the headlines move right into Providence and we're forced to examine the reality of life as a person of color in the liberal Northeast.  Told half in explosive spoken word and half in traditional scenes, this play manages to convey a lot without coming off as didactic or cliche'.  In particular, it shines a light on experiences that probably most people of color have had, that would likely make many white people say “I had never thought about that”.

Trinity's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is unquestionably a must-see performance this spring and, a scarce three months into the new year, can easily be considered in the running for best production of 2016.
