Contemporary Theater Company to Launch Shakespeare on the Saugatucket

By:
The Contemporary Theater Company is combining the beauty of nature and the poetic words of the Bard with Shakespeare on the Saugatucket.

In July and August, Shakespeare on the Saugatucket performances will commence at 7 pm on Wednesdays and Sundays on the company's new riverfront performance patio behind the main theater along the Saugatucket River. All performances of Shakespeare on the Saugatucket are free and open to the public thanks to a sponsorship from Bank RI.

July features Comedy of Errors, one of Shakespeare's early comedies full of physical humor and mistaken identity.

"Comedy of Errors has a lot of the hallmarks of Shakespeare's comedies," says Communications Director Maggie Cady, "but it's also full of silliness and slapstick, making it a perfect fit for an outdoor space!"

In August, the theater turns their sights on Antony and Cleopatra, an epic of love and war. The ensemble is working hard to ensure that the language enhances the story rather than confusing the audience.

"We're producing a Shakespeare for all," says director Matt Fraza, "wherein the milieu and history of the play is bathed in the light of understanding, and audiences will truly be able to feel the plight and passion of the title characters and their allies as they love, fight, and wrestle with their fates."

This fall, the Contemporary Theater Company tackles another of Shakespeare's greatest plays with Macbeth as their fall mainstage production playing in October and November, featuring Artistic Director Christopher Simpson as Macbeth.

Performances of Shakespeare on the Saugatucket will proceed rain or shine with performances in inclement weather taking place inside the theater.

Tickets for performances and more information about the company are available online at www.contemporarytheatercompany.com or by calling 401-218-0282.
