BWW Review: Festival Ballet's Exceptional UP CLOSE ON HOPE
by Andria Tieman - March 08, 2016
Festival Ballet's productions are always exciting and beautiful, but the UP CLOSE ON HOPE series is a rare treat.  Unlike the lavish productions at PPAC or the Vets, these are small, intimate performances of works one might not see anywhere else.  This spring's UP CLOSE program showcases the best of what Festival is all about with two stunning pieces featuring new choreography, new musical arrangement and hauntingly beautiful performances from our local dancers.  This program is a rare treat in that leaves the viewer emotionally disarmed, but still wanting more.
Burbage Theatre Creates Bloody but Shallow Spectacle with TITUS ANDRONICUS
by Robert Barossi - March 04, 2016
One might argue that Titus is the perfect kind of play for a bold young company like Burbage Theatre Company. Willing and able to take risks, to go places other theater companies might not be so interested in going. And while there are some high points for Burbage and their production, it seems that they've fallen into the trap of focusing too much on one thing, to the detriment of other important aspects of Shakespeare's work. Primarily, they seem to have spent most of the time perfecting all of that carnage, all the blood and gore, while not spending enough time on perfecting the actual text, the words and language that make up the work and create its true life. As a friend and Shakespearean scholar noted to me, “That's always the danger with Titus, I'm afraid,” and her fears would have been realized in this production.

BWW Review: The Gamm's Delectably Dark A SKULL IN CONNEMARA
by Andria Tieman - March 02, 2016
Dark humor can be a challenge at times, but when it works, it can be so completely satisfying that it sticks in your mind long after the show is over.  A SKULL IN CONNEMARA is one of those shows, and not only is author Martin McDonagh's writing is a delightful exploration of the twisted and macabre, but the outstanding performances of Jim O'Brien, Jonathan Fisher, Wendy Overly and Steve Kidd deliver McDonagh's words to the audience and leave them laughing until it hurts.  This is a play that's strange and sinister, but so thoroughly hilarious that it's hard to describe, and director Judith Swift captured the spirit of it perfectly.

BWW Review: LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE at 2nd Story
by Larry O'Brien - February 29, 2016
You are almost out of time to go see LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE by Delia and Nora Ephron, currently running Downstage at 2nd Story Theatre in Warren. Part of this is 2nd Story's fault, as the show had a limited run to begin with; and partly this is my fault because my computer monitor quit and delayed you faithful correspondent in the swift completion of his appointed rounds. Sigh. Still, you have another weekend.
BWW Review: Ocean State Theatre Tells a Timely Story of Politics and History with 1776
by Robert Barossi - February 29, 2016
Some events in history cry out to be made into a movie or a book or a stage play. Others don't seem like such an obvious choice at first glance. One might guess it would be quite difficult to pull off creating a musical out of the writing of the Declaration of Independence, of all things. But, as Ocean State Theatre Company proves with its current production, 1776 is both fascinating and fun, both engaging and entertaining, as it tells the story of the Declaration's creation and our country's birth.
