An Evening with Sutton Foster and Kelli O’Hara at the San Francisco Symphony is exactly the kind of event that reminds you why live performance is so magical. Inspired by the legendary 1962 television special featuring Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews, the evening celebrates not only two extraordinary contemporary performers, but also the timeless joy of song, storytelling, and musical theatre itself. Rather than simply presenting a concert, Foster and O’Hara crafted an affectionate homage to the women who paved the way for generations of Broadway artists.
When I think of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, I don't think of camp. It's content and presentation are typically really earnest. But the Taproot Theatre’s latest production leans into ‘camp’ in every sense of the word. Set in a children’s summer camp talent show, this production finds a fresh, loud, and approachable entry point into a familiar tale, resulting in a production packed with energy, humor, and enough spectacle to entertain the whole family.
Fly North has staged a solid and frightening production of Sweeney Todd. It is impressive that Healy and his Fly North team chose to stage an epic musical in a very small space with just 12 actors. The company was led by Chandler Spradling as Sweeney Todd and Jennelle Gilreath-Owens as Mrs. Lovett. The cast, including Parker Miller, Nathan Hakenewerth, Rachel Bailey, Margaret Beekman, Ken Haller, Matt Ingram, Dereis Lambert, Mia Millican, Crispin Shininger, and Isobel Ramsey sings their faces off with haunting vocals that add to the production’s sinister eeriness.
