Classrooms Without Borders and Rodef Shalom Congregation present acclaimed Israeli actor/ director/ dramaturg Roy Horovitz, making his Pittsburgh debut in his production of My First Sony. The one-man play is an award-winning monodrama which has toured Israel and the globe to great acclaim and rave reviews for more than 20 years. Based on Benny Barbash's Israeli bestseller by the same name, the play tells the story of Yotam, an eleven-year-old child, who becomes obsessed with documenting his life after receiving a children's tape recorder, his “First Sony." Yotam records events involving his family, and we hear their voices, their struggles and heartbreak. He presents his findings with naive honesty and humor, which help to soften the painful coming-of-age played so expertly.

The program will be held in Levy Hall at Rodef Shalom, 4905 Fifth Avenue, at 2:00pm on Sunday, February 12th. The event includes the hour-long performance (in English) and a Q&A session, followed by a reception. The event is FREE with a suggested $10 donation. Reserved seating is available for a $25 donation.

Reservations can be made via the Classrooms Without Borders website.

Horovitz is a familiar figure on Israeli stages, having worked with such renowned companies as the Habimah National Theatre and the Beer Sheva Theatre. He has appeared in Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Denver, but American audiences are more likely to have seen him in the 2001 feature film, The Body, starring Antonio Banderas. Horovitz is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv, where his courses include topics like the current Israeli theater scene, the preoccupation of Israeli playwrights with the Holocaust, and the modern interpretation of the Bible on the stage.
