In playwright Kevin Artigue's riveting and thought-provoking new two-person play SHEEPDOG---which finishes up its World Premiere run at Orange County's South Coast Repertory through May 5, 2019 as part of the theater's annual Pacific Playwrights Festival---the ripped-from-the-headlines plot point that finds a young black man being fatally shot by a white police officer becomes an added layer of troubling complication to an already shaky relationship between two genuinely good, aspirational people who are deeply in love---who also happen to be an interracial couple both employed as police officers. A love story rattled by external forces, the play posits the question of whether it is even possible for two people---or at least these two specific people---to carry on a successful romantic relationship while having this specific kind of a job and also while each identifies with one of two separate communities with a long tragic history between them. SHEEPDOG tackles the subject with grace and open-mindedness and therefore makes it one of the most powerful and provocative new plays to come out this season.

After the success of Vincent Victoria Presents' latest original play 'Hattie's Big Night' in February, the company decided to bring the show back for four additional encore performances this Mother's Day Weekend. It seems appropriate, as the show's central character Hattie Mc Daniel was the unofficial 'Mother of Black Hollywood' during her over twenty year career in Hollywood. Known for her kindness and generosity towards other performers, Mc Daniel was a fixture in the film community during the 1930's and 40's.
Cork, Ireland-based Talos (a.k.a. Eoin French) has just released the cinematic new video for '2AM', taken from his second album Far Out Dust, released earlier this year on BMG. Directed by Niall O'Brien, French describes the song and video as a 'document of hedonism. It occurs in the dead of night across a peak of bliss, with bodies drenched in shadow and sweat, moving slowly together.' Watch the video for '2AM' HERE via The 405.
This month is all about gender when it comes to the theatre I've seen. The first was Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Theater Latte Da which really flips gender upside down. The second now is a beautiful production of VictorVictoria at Artistry in Bloomington. VictorVictoria is a truly unique story that also has some deep roots within the state of Minnesota.
