It’s hard not to be swept up in the Mamma Mia juggernaut. Since its Broadway premiere in 2001, it’s grossed over $4.5 billion, been seen by 70 million people, turned into two record-breaking movies with productions in 16 different languages.
The 30-member company who will bring the global smash hit musical MAMMA MIA!, the ultimate feel-good show set to the timeless songs of ABBA, home to Broadway this summer has been announced.
Silly stories like this work better on stage, where the particulars of the real world aren’t around to underscore implausibility. It’s quite a setup: 20-year-old bride-to-be Sophie has never known a father, but by the time the prologue is over, she has already swiped her mom’s diary, identified three old flames as the could-be dad, invited each of them to a remote Greek island for her upcoming wedding, and concocted an elaborate rouse to keep all of this from her betrothed, her mother, the men, and her mom’s two best friends. The objective: lay eyes on each potential pop for a “vibes check” in hopes of finally IDing her dad.
It’s been over 9 years since Mamma Mia played it’s final performance on Broadway. The show was a Broadway mainstay for nearly 15 years before closing in 2015, and no production since has truly been able to capture the pure joy of what makes the show so great. At the height of its success, it spawned a star studded and successful film adaptation; and post closure, a film sequel. After the show’s broadway closure, some non-equity tours did their best, but something felt off. I’m beyond overjoyed to report that the shows current iteration (billed as the 25th anniversary tour), is nothing short of delightful and miraculous merriment.

Guilty as charged. I openly admit I really enjoy the ABBA musical, MAMMA MIA! MAMMA MIA! is an electrifying and heartwarming musical that never fails to delight audiences, and the national tour I experienced last night was no exception. From start to finish, the production was filled with infectious energy, stunning choreography, and, most importantly, incredible vocal performances.
25 years after its first production, Mamma Mia! the musical is making the rounds with a stop at Milwaukee's own Marcus PAC. Famously based off the book by Catherine Johnson and featuring music by ABBA, the story centers around Sophie, who is set to get married in Greece, and the mystery of her biological father's identity.
