Peterborough Players wraps up its first season of new, popular interactive theatrical workshops, Playgroup, online on December 4th and 11th at 7:30pm EST.

Peterborough Players pulls back the curtain on Shakespeare in the next offering of their interactive theatrical workshop series, Playgroup. The two-session workshop will occur online on November 13th and 20th at 7:30pm EST.

National Black Theatre has officially announced the cast, creative team, and ticket sales date for the institution's first produced radio play, Retreat, written by NBT I AM SOUL Playwright Resident Tracey Conyer Lee (Rabbit Summer) and directed by Zhailon Levingston (Neptune; Dixon Place and The Brooklyn Museum).

Tomorrow, Harlem9, the Obie Award-Winning producing collective, begins the stream of their 10th Annual and 1st Digital Festival.  The Harlem based collective is no stranger to Black Playwrights, Actors and Directors who also make their living within the Theatre, TV and Film industry. 

Dr. Barbara Ann Teera??s National Black Theatre has expanded its SOUL Series LAB Residency Programs to select five artists. Due to the impact of the pandemic on freelance artists, NBT wanted to deepen its investment in Black artists and support the professional development of key stakeholders of creative production within American Theatre.

Harlem9 recently announced that their 10th Anniversary would be Digital. Last year, 2019, was the first year that the Obie Award-Winning collective went National.

The stellar commemoration starts Monday, June 8 at 6:30PM with a half hour preshow including a five-course dinner party, red-carpet showcase, and video chat room preceding the concert.

National Black Theatre has released a statement regarding updates due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre [NBT] announces the two workshop productions of its 51st Season 'SOUL Journey: NBT Beyond Walls': Bayano by Darrel Alejandro Holnes, directed by Jeffrey Page, and Retreat by Tracey Conyer Lee, directed by Zhailon Levingston, running March 11-15 and April 1-5 respectively.

Racism and homophobia reign in 1950s Houston, the setting of Ricardo Pérez González's world premiere of On the Grounds of Belonging. The play begins as white drag queen Thomas Aston (Jeremiah Clapp) from whites only gay bar, The Red Room, hides from a raid at The Gold Room, a blacks only gay bar. Thomas falls head over his high heels for Russell Montgomery (Calvin Leon Smith), a quiet, erudite journalist who has a not too distant past with fellow patron Henry Stanfield (Blake Anthony Morris). But against the advice of bar manager Hugh Williams (Thomas Silcott), Thomas and Rusty begin a serious love affair. This is not a good time or place to be an interracial gay couple, but their biggest threat is Henry, who bashes Thomas in the head out of jealousy and hurt. Mooney Fitzpatrick (Craig Bockhorn), the gay and bigoted owner of the two gay bars, tells Russell that Thomas, whom he loved like a son, died of his wounds. He threatens to lynch the person who killed him. Sounds a bit like Romeo and Juliet, but neither character dies at the end. They are just separated seemingly forever. Rounding out this excellent ensemble is Tanya Starr (Tracey Conyer Lee), a torch singer at The Gold Room, who helps Henry escape. All the cast members are genuine in their roles, playing them without stereotypes. You can't help but feel their loneliness. Bockhorn is chilling as a man who, with his partner, took in a very young orphaned Thomas, yet is vindictive enough to lynch someone. Lee is a talented singer as well as actress.
