Forty years ago, three struggling artists (writer/director Robin Hirsch, actor Charles McKenna, visual artist Raphaela Pivetta), opened a one room storefront cafe on Cornelia Street in the heart of the West Village. With a toaster oven and an espresso machine, Cornelia Street Cafe became a magnet for artists of all genres, who soon found a home, and a willing and appreciative audience. That was on July 4, 1977. Suzanne Vega is not a firecracker; she's a sparkler. In the first night of her run at Cafe Carlyle on March 15---since the previous day's show was nixed due to a rude winter storm named Stella---Vega was dazzling, but in the smallest, most personal way possible. Getting up onstage, she spoke with the calm, reassuring but controlled tone of a therapist or a meditation coach. While that may not sound like a great recipe for a stage persona, Vega's stripped-down performance bordered on hypnotic. (more...)

Alley Theatre held its second annual new play festival - the 2017 Alley All New Festival from February 2-12- and a World Premiere of NSangou Njikam's Syncing Ink on February 8 2017. The festival included seven plays from playwrights including Robert Askins, Bekah Brunstetter and Rajiv Joseph.  The festival also welcomed more than 40 artists, including Suzanne Vega, Faith Prince and Josie de Guzman.
