BWW Interview: Rachel Landon of WHO'S HOLIDAY at Open Stage
by Andrea Stephenson - Nov 14, 2019

Who's ready for some great holiday entertainment? There are so many great shows to see during the holiday season. If you need a break from all the holiday craziness and a chance to laugh until your cheeks hurt, hop on over to Open Stage for Who's Holiday. Who's Holiday, by Matthew Lombardo, is not your typical Christmas play. It is a show with only one actor. It answers the age-old question of what happens to characters after the original story ends. Told by Cindy Lou Who, it is the story of what happened to her after the Grinch's famous redemption in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The story is told in typical Seussian rhyme. Rachel Landon will be taking on the role of Cindy Lou at Open Stage, and she took some time to talk to us about Who's Holiday, directed by Stuart Landon, opening on November 16th.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Open Stage Of Harrisburg
by Andrea Stephenson - Dec 2, 2018

The 1843 Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol is a familiar tale. Each holiday season A Christmas Carol can be found in one of its over 130 adaptations on the screen or on the stage. As the stress of the holiday season grows, it is not unusual to hear someone utter the words made famous by Ebenezer Scrooge-Bah! Humbug! No matter what version of the classic tale we see, however, the story reminds us that the true spirit of the holiday season is one of compassion, kindness, forgiveness, charity, love, and hope. A Christmas Carol opened for the 19th year at Open Stage of Harrisburg on December 1st.

BWW Interview: Stuart Landon of THE FLICK at Open Stage Of Harrisburg
by Andrea Stephenson - Mar 19, 2018

Technology and our experience of entertainment go hand-in-hand. I remember watching movies on VHS tapes, seeing actual slides in classes in school, and saving computer documents on floppy disks. The 2014 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, The Flick by Annie Baker, is set in a movie theatre that is one of the last that still shows 35mm films. Being born in 1980, I fall into the last year of Generation X-part of that weird gap in between Gen X and Millennials that some have called Xennial. I learned how to type on a typewriter in high school, I know how exciting it was to hear 'you've got mail' and the frustration of waiting for a dial-up modem (not to mention the fact that if someone wanted to make a phone call you couldn't be on-line). Our phones had cords and you actually talked into them. And if you wanted to watch a movie at home you rented a VHS tape from Blockbuster. Many of us have experienced the transitions brought about by changes in technology. This is just one of the real-life themes that The Flick explores. This show will be performed by Open Stage Harrisburg at Midtown Cinema. Broadway World spoke with the director, Stuart Landon to learn more about this award-winning play.

BWW Review: AKEELAH AND THE BEE at Open Stage Of Harrisburg
by Andrea Stephenson - Feb 17, 2018

Akeelah and the Bee was first seen on the big screen in 2006. Written and directed by Doug Atchison, the film follows the journey of a young girl, Akeelah Anderson, who overcomes a variety of challenges to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The film was adapted for the stage by playwright Cheryl West and first appeared on stage in 2015. This inspiring, family-friendly show is directed by Sharia Benn and Stuart Landon and produced in partnership with Sankofa African American Theatre Company at Open Stage Harrisburg. In a fitting introduction not only to Sankofa African American Theatre Company but also to Akeelah and the Bee, Sharia Benn stated that our community, our nation, and our world need opportunities like the ones presented by theatre to 'understand that even though we are different, we are so much the same.'

AKEELAH AND THE BEE Comes to Open Stage Of Harrisburg
by A.A. Cristi - Jan 8, 2018

Based on the smart, feel-good movie, Akeelah and the Bee tells the story of a spirited and independent 11-year old from South Side, Chicago. Akeelah has an immense passion for words, and her razor-sharp mind and tenacity keeps her one step ahead of the game in the neighborhood...but is it enough to get her to the top? Akeelah must turn to family, friends, and a few unlikely mentors if she's going to survive the final round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. A story about family, intolerance and overcoming the odds, Akeelah and the Bee is a heartfelt look at how one person has the potential to change the world around them.
