With 2019 coming to a close, the new decade is set to bring us a slew of film adaptations of our favorite stage musicals! From West Side Story to In the Heights to The Prom, we are gearing up for some big films, but before we move into 2020, let's have a look back on the last ten years of musicals turned into films!

Focus Features is set to partner with writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson on his untitled new film.  Anderson and Focus Features collaborated on his last feature Phantom Thread, which garnered 6 Academy Award® nominations including Best Picture, Director for Anderson, Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, Supporting Actress for Lesley Manville, Score for Jonny Greenwood and Costume Design for Mark Bridges, which he went on to win.  Longtime collaborators JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi will produce this new project along with Anderson. 

In 2014, writer and director Simon Stone brought an exciting, new version of Euripides classic Medea to the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, followed by a run at London's Barbican in 2019. Now, the play is coming to NYC.

BAM will soon present Simon Stone's Medea-in previews beginning January 12 in the Harvey Theater. The production will star Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Rose Byrne (Damages, Bridesmaids, Get Him to the Greek, You Can't Take It with You) and two-time Emmy winner and Tony nominee Bobby Cannavale (Mauritius, The Motherf-er with the Hat). Produced by BAM, International Theater Amsterdam, and David Lan, it comes to BAM in its US premiere.

First Floor Theater presents the Chicago premiere of the award-winning SUGAR IN OUR WOUNDS, part of playwright Donja R. Love's trilogy of black love at pivotal moments in history, helmed by Company Member Mikael Burke, director of last season's acclaimed production of Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies. SUGAR IN OUR WOUNDS will play October 19 – November 23, 2019 at FFT's resident home, The Den Theatre (2B), 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago. Tickets are currently on sale at firstfloortheater.com. Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor, singer, director, composer, and playwright Billy Porter will receive the NAB Show New York Impact Award on Thursday, October 17. NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith will present the award at NAB Show New York, held October 16-17 at the Javits Convention Center.

Netflix has ordered The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show, sketch comedy series from Iliza Shlesinger. The six-episode half-hour series will shoot in New York this fall and launch in 2020.
