McLean Community Players to Stage Tony-Winning Musical 1776

?The McLean Community Players' production of the musical 1776, based on the events surrounding the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence, opens Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, and runs weekends through Feb. 21 at McLean's Alden Theatre. With music by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, 1776 became an improbable hit and won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 1969. Director Annie O'Neill Galvin leads an award-winning cast and crew for this production.

The York Theatre Company has announced today Broadway's Klea Blackhurst (York's Call Me Madame) Mario Cantone (Assassins), Erin Davie (York's Silk Stockings, Side Show), Matt McGrath (Nice Work If You Can Get It), and Mary Louise Wilson (On the Twentieth Century), along with the acclaimed Yale Wiffenpoofs, have joined the roster of illustrious special guest performers who will gather to honor Broadway and Hollywood legend Angela Lansbury at 2015 Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre on Monday, November 16, 2015 at Guastavino's (409 East 59th Street).

Tom Wopat returns to the Barn to star as Will Rogers in the musical comedy THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES - A Life in Revue, playing August 25 - September 6. Set in the glitz and glamour of Rogers' Ziegfeld Follies days, the musical tells the life story of the cowboy rope trick artist turned political satirist, philosopher, write, movie star, humanitarian, champion of the underdog and friend of kings and presidents.

Today in 1997, the first Broadway revival of 1776 opened at Criterion Center Stage Right, where it ran for 333 performances. 1776 is a musical with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone. The story is based on the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It focuses on, and partly fictionalizes, the efforts of John Adams to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence and to sign the document. The production was nominated for five Tony Awards and won three, including the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical was made into a film of the same name in 1972.
