BWW Review: PHAEDRA, Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House
by Alexandra Coghlan - May 17, 2019

God it's good to have the Linbury back. The reopening of the Royal Opera House's second, smaller space last December after a lengthy redesign brought with it all kinds of possibilities. Repertoire excised from schedules or exiled (with mixed success) to partner venues could finally return, with whole swathes of contemporary and period repertoire suddenly back in the house. Since then we've seen a thoughtful world premiere (Gavin Higgins' The Monstrous Child), a quite brilliant bit of Handel (Berenice) and now a new staging of Henze's late chamber opera Phaedra.

by Gary Naylor - Mar 28, 2019

Berenice is something of a forgotten delight, its tortuous plotting more than offset by its splendid arias and delightful characters, with plenty of contemporary resonance on hand if you need it.

U.S. Premiere Of GROUPIE by Sir Arnold Wesker Announced for New York City
by A.A. Cristi - Nov 22, 2017

The late Arnold Wesker is highly regarded as a distinguished voice of the British Theater. Following his death in January 2016, Vicky Featherstone, artistic director at the Royal Court Theater, said that his working-class characters and his outsider status changed who theater was for, and enabled a new generation of audience, actors and playwrights to feel they had a right to belong. Yet much of his work, while celebrated by scholars and historians the world over, is hardly ever produced for an American audience. But Director Charles Maryan is about to change that with GROUPIE.
