A.R.T. American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) opens its 2011-12 season with The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin. The adaptation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray, directed by A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus, with choreography by Ronald K. Brown, begins previews on August 17 and opens for the reviewing press on August 31 at 7pm. Legends 2011 will have two themes: A celebration of the state's new anti-bullying law and anticipation of the next step to win marriage equality in New Jersey - a step expected imminently. Performing will be Anthony Rapp, star of the Tony Award®-winning musical Rent; Shoshana Bean, star of the Tony Award®-winning musical Wicked; NaTasha Yvette Williams, star of the Tony Award®-winning musical The Color Purple; Anwar Robinson, a finalist on television's American Idol; Liz Callaway, Emmy Award®-winner and star of the Tony Award®-winning musical Miss Saigon; and the Grammy®-nominated, Broadway and recording star Maureen McGovern.

Saturday night, June 25, 2011 at the Jersey City Hyatt Regency, Lady Gaga's mother and Tyler Clementi's cousin will join stars from Hollywood, Broadway and politics at Legends, Garden State Equality's famous annual gala. More than 850 people will attend.

The New York Times suggests today that after a widly successful industry presentation in New York on Sunday, the American Repertory Theater's production of Porgy and Bess, starring Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis, David ALan Grier, and Joshua Henry, may be headed to Broadway as early as next season. The production of the Gershwin classic, will open A.R.T.'s 2011-2 season on August 14 at the Loeb Drama Center. Porgy and Bess is written by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin, is adapted by Suzan-Lori Parks and Diedre Murray, and will be directed by A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus (Hair).

Michael Frayn's 1975 comedy, Alphabetical Order, is the type of play that, either as a compliment or as a dismissal, American audiences are likely to label as 'very British.'  Its humor is subtle, its themes are sub-textual and the characters all talk in these funny accents.  But even those who appreciate the delicacy of that type of play may find this early work by the versatile writer who went on to pen the riotous Noises Off and the heady Copenhagen a little padded and lacking in both humor and bite.  Still, director Carl Forsman and the Keen Theatre Company serve up a lively production that boasts its charms, particularly in the performances of the engaging ensemble.
