A new musical is being developed by a Nova Scotian writing team that will feature songs originally made famous by Anne Murray, the Grammy-award-winning singer from Springhill, Nova Scotia. The show just underwent a 2-week developmental workshop in Halifax with an 11-member cast of actors. The workshop culminated in a staged reading presentation at the Bella Rose Arts Centre this past Friday.  (more...)

Tonight, America shall be introduced to the fourth incarnation of Hairspray. The first was the 1988 original film, the second was the 2002 Broadway musical, the third was its 2007 film adaptation, and now the 2016 live television production on NBC. Hairspray takes place in Baltimore, Maryland in the year 1962, where we meet a plump teenage girl named Tracy Turnblad, whose lifelong dream is to dance on the local TV dance program known as The Crony Collins Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show and becomes an overnight sensation, she luanches a campaign to intergrate the show. As a Welcome to the 60's, let's go back to beginning to learn the history of the property itself. (more...)

BWW Review: Seattle Children's Theatre's THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE: A Sprint Through Narnia

C.S. Lewis' 1950 fantasy novel, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' has withstood the test of time, delighting generations of children and adults, religious and non-religious alike in book, film, and theatre form. Adrian Mitchell's musical adaptation of 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' now performs at the Seattle Children's Theatre with a narrative faithfully streamlined from the original text. That very faithfulness certainly has its pro's with those familiar with the Christian allegory, but cramming every moment from the book into a two-hour musical made the story feel rushed. This is one aesthetically dazzling production that, as the adult, may require some explaining to the kids after the show. (more...)
