Review: STAGE OF FOOLS at Seattle Public Theater

Dear Readers, I love a good farce. Those door slammers with a controlled chaos as people try and get out of ridiculous situations. But they’re not easy to pull off. Sadly, the current offering from Seattle Public Theater, the world premiere of Joy McCullough’s “Stage of Fools”, doesn’t quite manage it. With some forced dialog and a handful of jokes beaten to death, literally, this uphill slog for laughs feels like unfocused and uncontrolled chaos, making it just chaos.

Review: ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE at Taproot Theatre

Patsy Cline was a generational talent, her voice timeless, her stage presence commanding, and her story unforgettable. Always... Patsy Cline brings that story to life, delving into touching moments from the country music legend's tragically brief life. Taproot Theatre handles this narrative with utmost delicacy and reverence. Wonderfully directed by Karen Lund, the production runs through June 14.

BWW Review: THE NERD at Taproot Theatre

Larry Shue’s raucous comedy “The Nerd” was a staple of midrange to small theaters all over back in the 80’s and 90’s. It was zany, smart, and didn’t require too many outlandish elements. So, I was fairly excited to catch this new local production currently being offered at Taproot Theatre, especially with the people in the cast. However, I’m not sure if the show is just not that funny anymore or if this production missed the mark but, while still having some definite gut buster moments, much of it fell flat.

BWW Review: Village Theatre's GUYS & DOLLS Has the 'Numbers' but Not the 'Story'

There's a reason that Frank Loesser's a?oeGuys & Dollsa?? has endured all these years and keeps coming back, it's a near perfect musical. It's fun and frothy with that rare breed of songs that all move the story along and tell a story of their own. But with these songs, and because of them, you need a love story that reads true, connections with everyone on stage, and storytelling in the staging and choreography as well as in the dialog and lyrics. And while the current production at Village Theatre has some numbers that worked and some wonderful performers, it lacked those three elements making the show a nice collection of performances with no spark or cohesion.
