BWW Review: JEFF HARNAR SINGS SONDHEIM: I KNOW THINGS NOW at 54 Below

I always know what to expect when seeing a Sondheim review - a quirky, rag-tag team-up of people patting themselves and their peers on the shoulder for getting through the rhythmic pitter-patter and haunting melodies with an air about them that says, 'Aren't you impressed, audience?' When Jeff Harnar entered the room, I knew I was in for so much more. As he walked down the aisle making his way to the 54 Below stage, the audience clapped and smiled, excited to see their old friend. And Jeff returned that sentiment for the entirety of the show, building on and celebrating the inherent connection that brought us all here.

BWW Review: THE MELODY LINGERS ON - The Mabel Mercer Foundation Salutes Irving Berlin at Rose Hall

THE MELODY LINGERS ON: A GALA TRIBUTE TO THE SONGS OF IRVING BERLIN was a gathering of some of the biggest names in the cabaret world. There’s something a little odd about celebrating the intimate art of cabaret in a Broadway-sized theatre like Rose Hall, but to be honest it was one of the few venues sizable enough to hold all the cabaret fans who came to see this fine collection of talented artists. There were performances from Sandy Stewart, Jeff Harner, Andrea Marcovicci, Eric Yves Garcia, Karen Oberlin, David LaMarr, Natalie Douglas, Stacy Sullivan & Todd Murray, Karen Akers, Steve Ross, Amra-Faye Wright, Klea Blackhurst, Billy Stritch, Aisha de Haas, Christine Andreas, Sidney Myer, Karen Mason, Nicolas King, Mark Nadler, and the Moipai Triplets. In addition to these wonderful performers, we were treated to some of NYC’s best musicians including Ray Marchicka, Steve Doyle, Jon Weber, Bill Charlap, Darnell White, Alex Rybeck, Mark Hummel, Michael Rice, and Tracy Stark.

BWW Review: THE LINEUP WITH SUSIE MOSHER at Birdland Should Be Your Tuesday Night Hangout

Birdland, the world-famous jazz club, features two of these latter-day vaudeville offshoots. Jim Caruso's Cast Party has been a staple of Birdland for years, serving as Broadway's open mic experience. But every Tuesday evening, Susie Mosher presides over a somewhat more curated and far more ribald variety show in Birdland's downstairs theatre. THE LINEUP is not an open mic. Mosher puts together its guests each week. They are from every echelon of show business, from Tony winners to new up-and-coming artists. They often have nothing in common except for a wild amount of talent. Susie Mosher serves as the host of the evening. She is a combination of den mother, improv artist, and Tasmanian devil. Her wit is faster than lightning and she can turn on a dime into a fantastic chanteuse. I was lucky enough to catch the latest edition of THE LINEUP this evening.

BWW Review: Aaron Lee Battle Tames the Heat With Cool Jazz at West Bank Cafe

Aaron Lee Battle and Jon Weber are a testament to one of the things that make New York such an amazing city: the artists who call this place home are working at the top of their game and are always moving the goalpost toward something finer, something more challenging, and something more beautiful.
