BWW Feature: THE CRUCIBLE at Palm Canyon TheatreBWW Feature: THE CRUCIBLE at Palm Canyon Theatre
by Stan Jenson - Oct 10, 2019

Arthur Miller's American classic, The Crucible, is being presented this weekend by Palm Canyon Theatre, and it is relevant as more than just a precursor to Halloween's witches. Written in 1953 as a protest against Joseph McCarthy's persecution of anyone he decided was a Communist, it is a timely warning today to base decisions on fact and common sense, not hysteria. Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE Hits Close to Home at Theatricum BotanicumArthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE Hits Close to Home at Theatricum Botanicum
by BWW News Desk - May 17, 2018

A parable of mass hysteria that draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch hunts of 1692 and McCarthyism, which gripped America in the 1950s, The Crucible by Arthur Miller remains eerily timely in today's climate of fake news. Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum, its own history firmly rooted in the McCarthy-era Hollywood blacklist - when actor Will Geer and his wife, Herta Ware, created the theater as a haven for blacklisted actors - opens a new production of Miller's modern classic onJune 30. Theatricum artistic director Ellen Geer, Will's daughter, is at the helm, with family members Thad Geer,Willow Geer and Melora Marshall featured in the cast. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jan 22, 2018

Be afraid, be very afraid. In Miller's searing masterpiece, an invisible enemy unleashes a dangerous hysteria. As Artistic Director Mark Booher observed, From time to time, we human beings have periods of moral panic that overtakes us. The Crucible is one such timeless telling. While focused on literal witch hunts, it is also an allegory for any number of misguided crusades through the ages, including ominous opinions against select groups of people in our current state of the world. Arthur Miller's landmark play has gripped audiences for nearly 65 years, but couldn't be more timely in today's political environment. The story focuses on a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife's arrest for witchcraft The Crucible performs October 12th thru 22nd at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215.
