2025 was a stellar year from theatre, but now the New Year has rolled in, we can put away the festive decorations, throw out the last bit of leftover turkey and look forward to an even better twelve months of theatrical goodies.

BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO opened at the Young Vic this week, and runs through January 31 — here is what critics thought of the production in the United Kingdom.

Bengal Tiger At The Baghdad Zoo, arriving now at the Young Vic for its long-overdue European premiere, is ostensibly about the American occupation of Iraq. Really, though, Rajiv Joseph’s Pulitzer-nominated work is about two things: a gold-plated toilet seat stolen from Uday Hussein (son of Saddam and recreational rapist, torturer and murderer), and the sheer, unforgivable absurdity of existence.

Brian Conley will once again be joined on-stage by his daughter, Lucy Conley, who stars as Goldilocks along with renowned dame David Robbins as Dame Betty Barnum, and more.

Now, we’re not here to tell you how to spend your money, so, by all means, if you want to see some people off the telly in real life, they’re discounting ticket prices left and right. However, be aware that there are better ways and better plays to invest cash on.

The Hodgson’s had no idea what a poltergeist was when, in the summer of 1977, furniture and toys started moving of their own accord. An ordinary, working-class family, who lived in a north London council house became the centre of one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world. This is the story of one night in the spring of 1978 when events were approaching a climax. 

Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Ian Smith has added extra dates to his tour of Crushing, which was awarded 14 x 4 and 5-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and was one of the top-rated shows there this year.

Written by Paul Unwin, and directed by Angus Jackson, The Enfield Haunting is currently playing at Richmond Theatre and moves to The Ambassadors Theatre in London for a limited West End season from 30 November 2023 until 2 March 2024.
