NETworks Presentations LLC announces that the national tour of Rodgers & Hammerstein's THE KING AND I, based on the 2015 Tony Award -winning Lincoln Center Theater Production, will make its Lowcountry premiere at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center for 2 shows only December 11 & 12 as part of the Best of Broadway series presented by Planet Fitness. In its way, The Barn (as it is affectionately known in these parts) and its laudable history ensure that its treatment of the popular musical theater title lend the show's historical basis more than a little gravitas in the making of a stage spectacle. Broadway Dance Lab will launch its first summer Choreography Intensive today, welcoming 10 young choreographers, ages 18-29, for a one-week immersion in the art of theatre dance-making. The faculty roster includes BDL Artistic Director Josh Prince, Jeff Calhoun, JoAnn M. Hunter, Al Blackstone, Marc Bruni, and more. The program will run through August 5 at Baryshnikov Arts Center. Based on the 1992 Disney film of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the real-life newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City, Newsies tells the captivating story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. When I last met up with these newsboys, it was during their strike at DPAC back in 2015. Since then, the tour closed up shop after a two-year run, became a hit Fathom Event, and is now available for licensing to schools, community, and regional theatres all over the world. (more...)

The Broadway at Birdland concert series presented the return of Broadway singer/actor Max von Essen in concert last night, July 23. Max von Essen, currently starring in the hit Broadway production of Anastasia, returned with his old fashioned, new show celebrating the best of Broadway and the American songbook. Once again, Billy Stritch was musical director for the evening, with Steve Doyle on bass, Daniel Glass on drums, and Mairi Dorman-Phaneuf on cello. (more...)

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, the critically acclaimed, award-winning new musical will conclude its Broadway engagement at the Palace Theatre (1564 Broadway at West 47th Street) on Sunday, September 16, 2018, due to previously planned theatre renovations beginning mid-September. Early in 2019, school and youth group licensing rights will be available, with professional licensing to follow. Additionally, a North American tour will begin fall 2019 (cities, venue engagements and casting to be announced at a later date). The production, which began previews on November 6, 2017, and opened on December 4, 2017, will have played 327 regular performances and 29 previews. (more...)
