The Steps Beyond Foundation, Steps on Broadway's non-profit organization that connects artists and community through dialogue, performance, and artistic collaboration, announces New Voices, New Works, New Stories, December 8 at 7:00 p.m, a performance lab to bolster and support the choreographic voice. This curated program includes 11 emerging and established artists selected by an esteemed committee to present works in theater, jazz, modern, tap, contemporary and ballet. Each choreographer selected for the lab is granted discounted rehearsal space, free marketing, and the technical tools to cultivate the evening presentation.

Nickelodeon is celebrating the holidays with a new competition series, Top Elf, premiering Friday, Nov. 29, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT). Across five one-hour episodes, seven kid 'Elf-testants' with extraordinary building and design skills compete in festive challenges to become Santa's 'Top Elf' and have their wish lists granted - not for themselves, but for good causes in their hometowns. Top Elf airs Fridays at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon, with the season finale airing Saturday, Dec. 21, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

Theatre UAB is offering an exceptional new play that highlights the voice of young women in the practice field to adulthood. 'The Wolves' is writer Sarah DeLappe's strikingly fresh and female centric drama. I found this play to be an enlightening and engaging look into the lives of nine completely different but competitive teenage girls on a high school soccer team. The play is structured as often-overlapping conversations play out over a series of practices. The 'real on the field' stems from the cause and effect of the girls lives getting into position for adulthood. The goals are made as relationships are tested, broken, and built between the team. The rare all female cast and production team radiate an exciting energy into 'The Wolves.'

This season, viewers are in for an extra treat as the Community Center Theatre undergoes its massive renovation. There are signs that the grandaddy of role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragons, is making a comeback, even among the kind of kids who'd usually be glued to their computer games. Visually stunning. Inventively staged. Compellingly acted. Beautifully told. Utterly delightful. Heartrendingly poignant. What more can be said about Once On This Island, the Lynn Ahrens-Stephen Flaherty musical which launched its national tour in Nashville last night with a remarkable opening performance before a capacity crowd in Andrew Jackson Hall? The critical raves, audience adulation and awards for the recent Broadway revival of the Caribbean-influenced musical were enough to attract ticket-buyers, to be certain, but the sheer artistry of the production and its amazingly talented cast will be more than enough to propel the company forward on their cross-country tour where, we suspect, the accolades will continue to be bestowed upon the heartfelt and authentic story.

The holidays are upon us filled with good cheer and family traditions. What better family to spend some time with than the Bennets from Pride and Prejudice? Lamenting a shortage of new plays for the holiday season, playwrights Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon decided to take on the challenge.
