What did our critic think of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at Thalia Mara Hall? As the lights dimmed and the music started in the auditorium of Thalia Mara Hall on Wednesday, February 28th, the air was charged and it felt like we were being invited into something sacred that was about to take place.

An explosive 90-minute sung-through Rock Opera written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice, took the Carol Morsani Hall by storm Tuesday evening. This reimagined 50th Anniversary Tour, is the story loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the Passion. It works to interpret the psychology of Jesus, while much of the story’s plot centers on Judas’ disdain for how Jesus is leading his disciples. The rock opera was initially unable to attain funding, so Webber and composers released the idea as a concept album. Garnering much success, which led to the eventual Broadway stage debut in 1971. Some nine years later the musical had grossed more than $237 million worldwide. It soon became the longest-running West End musical in London, running for 8 years between 1972-1980, and was soon bested by Cats in 1989.

The story of Jesus has been told through a plethora of artistic mediums throughout the centuries, but none so famous in this lifetime as Andrew Lloyd Weber's Jesus Christ Superstar now on its 50th Anniversary Tour and the latest production to make a stop at DCPA.

I had the privilege of being able to watch this production on opening night, and it was truly spectacular. From the beginning with the powerful orchestra, to the end with an impactful lesson on the consequences of your actions. 

The iconic JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR rises triumphantly at the Ohio Theatre as part of its reimagined 50th Anniversary tour.  Returning to its rock-album roots with a focus more on rock music than story, the concert spectacle moves at a swift 90 minute pace with no intermission, proving that Jesus’ rockstar appeal is eternal, even at 50.

What did our critic think of JESUS CHRIST, SUPERSTAR at Ohio Theater? Alex Stone has not lived in a world without JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. As a result, Stone feels a little bit humbled to be part of the show’s 50th anniversary national tour that rolls into town Oct. 3-8 at the Ohio Theater (39 E. State Street in downtown Columbus).
