Florian Zeller Headshot

BIO

Florian Zeller is a French novelist and playwright who was born on June 28, 1979, in Paris, France. He is best known for his plays, which have been produced in both French and English and have received critical acclaim.

Zeller began his career as a novelist, publishing his first book, "Neiges artificielles" (Artificial Snow), in 2002. He went on to publish several more novels, including "La Fascination du Pire" (The Fascination of Evil) and "Julien Parme" (Julien Parme), before turning his attention to playwriting.
Zeller's first play, "Le Manège" (The Carousel), was produced in Paris in 2003. He followed this with "Si tu mourais" (If You Were to Die) and "L'Autre" (The Other), both of which were produced in 2004. In 2010, he achieved his breakthrough with "La Mère" (The Mother), which was produced in Paris and went on to receive critical acclaim in London's West End and on Broadway.
"The Mother" tells the story of a woman struggling to come to terms with her son's death and her own sense of identity. The play explores themes of grief, loss, and mental illness, and has been praised for its powerful performances and emotional depth. Zeller's next play, "Le Père" (The Father), continued to explore these themes, focusing on an elderly man suffering from dementia and the impact his illness has on his family.
"The Father" premiered in Paris in 2012 and has since been produced in London's West End, on Broadway, and in theaters around the world. The play has been praised for its innovative structure, which reflects the confusion and disorientation experienced by the main character, as well as for its powerful performances and emotional impact.
Zeller's other plays include "Le Mensonge" (The Lie), "Une Heure de Tranquillité" (An Hour of Tranquility), and "Le Fils" (The Son), which premiered in Paris in 2018. "The Son" tells the story of a teenage boy struggling with depression and his parents' divorce, and has been praised for its sensitive treatment of mental health issues.
In addition to his work as a playwright, Zeller has also written screenplays for film and television. He wrote and directed the 2013 film "Les Amants du Flore" (The Lovers of the Flore), which tells the story of the relationship between French intellectuals Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. He has also written for the French television series "Les Sauvages" (Savages), which premiered in 2019.
Zeller's work has received numerous awards and nominations, including the Molière Award for Best Play for "The Father" and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play for both "The Father" and "The Mother." He was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play for "The Father" in 2016.
