When 'The Glass Menagerie' came to Broadway in 1944, it was Williams' first big success. He called it a 'memory play,' one that reflected his own unhappy family background. Delicate and shadowy, 'The Glass Menagerie' became a poignant classic of American theater, and it is the 4th offering of the Theatre 29 'Best Of' 2019 season.

How much one enjoys THE LIGHTNING THIEF, The Percy Jackson Musical, currently at the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston through July 28, may correlate directly with one's familiarity with the source material. On opening night, the large number of teens and tweens in the audience - who were clearly anticipating the appearance of every monster, plot twist and special effect - were laughing, cheering and clapping with unbridled vigor. However, the adults whom I queried at intermission, who had no such prior exposure to the immensely popular Rick Riordan children's book series that mashes up teen angst with Greek mythology, were considerably less enthralled.

Angelic-voiced Americana songcrafter Jessi McNeal has unveiled 'In Between,' a poignant new track and accompanying video from her forthcoming stunner The Driveway, out on August 16th. 'Jessi McNeal finds beauty in the waiting,' Wide Open Country said in their premiere of the single. 'I feel like the overarching theme of the album is really about the middle ground - the in-between, the waiting, the hope-not-yet seen,' McNeal told Wide Open Country. 'And this particular song really shines a light on that vulnerable space. I wrote this song when I was wrestling with some difficult circumstances - wanting things to be better and feeling some regrets as well. I needed to acknowledge both of those sentiments and to accept that I was simply in that in-between space, where the answers and resolution had yet to arrive. I sometimes hear people refer to it as the 'messy middle,' but lately, I've been thinking of it as the 'sacred middle.'  Brené  Brown says, 'owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.' This isn't easy work and I'm certainly no expert on it, but I'm grateful for the people in my life who have encouraged me to avoid taking shortcuts through pain when I've faced seasons like this,' she said. 'I know I'm stronger for it, and I hope I have more to offer to those around me because of it.'

On Saturday August 10, singer/actor Derek Klena, now a popular leading man on Broadway, returned to his California roots to present his first live LA concert on the El Portal Mainstage. To say it clicked, is an understatement. I have seen Klena perform since 2009 when he came in a runnerup in LA's Next Great Stage Star. He is handsome, charming, a real promising performer who comes from a warm West Covina family. Maybe it's because of these roots, that he is as successful as he is right now. He adores his caring mother and father and two siblings Lauren and Dylan. Though married to his high chool sweetheart and living in NYC, he returns regularly to celebrate birthdays and holidays with the family or to see his brother Dylan perform on local stages.

Memory is very precious. It connects us to our past and helps guide us to our future. In Tennessee Williams' magnum opus THE GLASS MENAGERIE, memory is a force of gravity and as the season opener for The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company's fifth season, a grounded production is one rarely seen but feels so uncompromisingly right.

I don't know if Benny Goodman “The King of Swing” ever performed at the original Birdland on Broadway at 52nd Street which was more known for the Bebop Jazz of Charlie Parker. However, his music was gloriously celebrated last night by John Pizzarelli and his special guest Clarinetist Ken Peplowski at the current Birdland on 44th Street. The link to the past was firmly established by the extraordinary artistry of Pizzarelli and Peplowski as they toured the Benny Goodman Songbook. The link was also established by the many stories both had about Benny Goodman. Ken Peplowski played in Benny's last band, and John's father Bucky was also was a featured guitarist with Goodman. In fact as John in his “Bucky Voice” recounted a funny story, when he was a youngster tagging along with Bucky John even got to strum a few notes for Benny Goodman until Bucky said “come on kid we gotta get home”! It was all smiles and happy swing music last night as John Pizzarelli and his trio with Ken Peplowski filled Birdland with great music and great conversation. The tradition of exceptional music continues at 'The Jazz Corner of The World”
