BWW Review: A PRISM of PROTOTYPE's INFINITE PSYCHOSIS for 2019
by Richard Sasanow - Jan 9, 2019

Where are our Violettas, our Salomes, our Elektras--even our Lulus--for opera to move forward as an art form for the 21 century? They're all victims of stress and suffering of one sort or another, but still worth meeting up with--not only musically but dramatically--more than once. I began thinking about this while watching the three music-theatre/new opera pieces that I visited during the opening days of the current edition of PROTOTYPE:OPERA/THEATRE/NOW--The Infinite Hotel, 4.48 Psychosis and PRISM. BWW Jr: Mama Will Decide: Knowing What's Appropriate
by Remy Holzer - Jan 7, 2019

'How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman...' So begins, as we all know, a musical that has, perhaps unexpectedly, enjoyed more popularity among children than any other in recent history. And yet, even in its first moments, the show confronts children with words they (especially younger children) may not have heard before and may not understand. When a group of small children in our elementary school talent show performed this song, they sang 'bastard' but labeled Hamilton the son of 'a girl and a Scotsman.' I don't know what parental or directorial input led to this alteration, but I do wonder what the children thought about it, both the original and the substitute lyric. (more...)

If diligence is The Mother of good luck, it makes sense that good karma succeeds right action. Accordingly, Jhett Tolentino personifies the insight of Benjamin Franklin's instructive aphorism. The Grammy and three-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer (“A Gentleman's Guide to Love And Murder,” “A Raisin In the Sun”) is unflagging in his pursuit of excellence. Indio's Desert Theatreworks has scored another bullseye with their current production of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. Simon's semi-autobiographical memory piece about his early teenage years in a crowded Brooklyn tenement is delivered in a finely-nuanced performance by a dream cast in the capable hands of director Rebecca Havely. As a result, the tale of a young teen's personal growth and exploration, set against a house full of family conflict and financial strife, takes the audience on a ride which they all seemed to greatly enjoy on the evening I viewed the show. BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS STORY at BDT Stage
by Jon Bee - Dec 13, 2018

Some shows in the Christmas theatre canon are taken from classic stories such as A Christmas Carol, while others perhaps form a more original holiday tale. And then there are the special few that can only be described as "cult-classic." In A Christmas Story, we once again meet little Ralphie and his family as he hopes for a Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun from Santa - or at least his parents. From the infamous scene at the flag pole to the leg-lamp in the window for all the neighbors to see, this current production at BDT Stage has it all for those wishing to live out a live version of their favorite Christmas movie.  (more...)
