Scott McPherson, born in Columbus, Ohio, was an actor and playwright who lived and worked in Chicago. His first full-length play, Till the Fat Lady Sings, was directed by Eric Simonson at Lifeline Theatre in Chicago in 1987 and received a Joseph Jefferson Citation for Best New Work. His one-act play, Scraped, premiered in a Chicago New Plays production at the Organic Theatre. Marvin’s Room was Scott's second and last full-length play and has been performed throughout the United States and around the world including, Australia, Canada, Slovakia, Turkey, Israel, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan, Finland, Sweden and Mexico. Marvin's Room premiered at the Goodman Theatre Studio in February 1990 and went on to the Hartford Stage, Playwrights Horizons and Minetta Lane in New York, London’s West End and the Tiffany Theatre in Los Angeles. For his work on Marvin's Room, Scott received the 1990 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Play, the 1991 Whiting Writer’s Award and, posthumously, the 1992 George Oppenheimer Award, 1993 Robby Award and the 1994 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award. Scott also wrote television shows for the Fox Television Network, WGN-TV and NBC. He wrote the film adaptation of Marvin's Room, a Miramax release, produced by Scott Rudin and starring Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwen Verdon and Hume Cronyn. Scott died of AIDS on November 7, 1992.

Cast Announced For Kristine Thatcher's Bio-Drama VOICE OF GOOD HOPE at City Lit Theater

Cast and design team have been announced for City Lit Theater's second production of the 2019-2020 season, Kristine Thatcher's VOICE OF GOOD HOPE, a bio-drama of Barbara Jordan, the first African American congresswoman from the Deep South. Jordan earned national stature in the 1970's as a member of the House Judiciary Committee that considered articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon and as the keynote speaker of the 1976 Democratic National Convention. Kristine Thatcher, who is City Lit's playwright-in-residence, was nominated for Best New Work in the 2019 Jeff Awards for her play, THE SAFE HOUSE, which premiered at City Lit last fall. VOICE OF GOOD HOPE premiered at Victory Gardens Theater in 2000 and has been produced across the US since then. Press opening is Sunday, January 19, 2020.

Previews begin this Friday, June 1 for the Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) world premiere production of LOG CABIN, a new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Jordan Harrison (Marjorie Prime, Maple and Vine, Doris to Darlene at Playwrights; "Orange Is the New Black").  Directed by Tony Award and Obie Award winner Pam MacKinnon (Clybourne Park, The Qualms at Playwrights; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Parisian Woman), LOG CABIN is the sixth and final production of the theater company's current 2017/2018 Season.  


Scott McPherson has been nominated for several awards for his work on the play "Marvin's Room." He was nominated for Outstanding New Play (Drama Desk Awards), Best American Play (New York Drama Critics Circle Awards), and the John Gassner Playwriting Award (Outer Critics Circle Awards). These nominations recognize his talent and contribution to the theater industry.

Scott McPherson has won the John Gassner Playwriting Award (Outer Critics Circle Awards) for his work on the Broadway show "Marvin's Room".
