Red Concepcion BIO

Red Concepcion is an exciting and dynamic performer. With more than a decade's worth of shows under his belt, he has portrayed a wide array of characters and has consistently churned out electric performances.

Red has recently won two of the most prestigious theatre awards in his homeland, the Philippines. He won the Aliw Award Best Actor in a Musical and the Gawad Buhay! Award for his star turn as Adam/Felicia in "Priscilla: Queen of the Desert".

Red's strong voice, expressive dancing and unique flair for comedy has made him a much sought-after actor in Manila, where he has appeared in such hit musicals as "Cinderella", "West Side Story", "Hairspray" and a number of original works.

Red has also been lauded for his work in plays such as the Manila productions of "The Normal Heart", where he played Tommy Boatwright, and "Equus" where he made waves as disturbed Alan Strang.

Red is just as comfortable in front of the camera as he is on stage. He was most recently seen as the tough but loveable dishwasher Sam in "The Boston: The Kitchen Musical", a musical comedy series which aired around Asia and in the United States on Myx TV.

Red hopes to reach a wider audience, and intends to be able to perform on a global scale one day.

He has achieved this dream through a star turn as co-lead The Engineer in the 2017-2018 European tour of "Miss Saigon", and as of August 2018 leads the new US TOUR of MISS SAIGON as "The Engineer"

Interview: Red Concepcion Looks on 'Mr. Cellophane's' Bright Side

Red Concepcion, who just made his Broadway debut in “Chicago,” sprinkles a little sunshine in his character, Amos Hart, who’s often depicted as Roxie’s “scummy, crummy, dummy hubby.” In the show’s first few minutes, it’s made clear Roxie has been cheating on Amos, clinging to men who have promised her a shot at being a local celebrity.

BWW Review: The Heat is On with MISS SAIGON at Saenger Theatre

There are few musicals that carry name recognition like that of Miss Saigon.

BWW Interview: Red Concepcion Plays the Engineer in MISS SAIGON Opening in New Orleans Next Week

There are a handful of musicals that I firmly believe every self-proclaimed theatre lover needs to see, if for no other reason, to say they've seen it. Among the ranks are LES MISERABLES, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, WEST SIDE STORY, I think it's now pretty safe to add WICKED to the list, and MISS SAIGON. They're classics, if you will. New Orleans is lucky enough to have two of these as part of the 2019-2020 Broadway Across America season, and gracing us this coming week is none other than MISS SAIGON.

BWW Review: MISS SAIGON at Majestic Theatre

Many people in attendance at the performance of MISS SAIGON at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio have vivid memories of the Vietnam War. Many may have actually fought over there, many protested in the United States in antiwar demonstrations, while others may have been living in the fighting zones as innocent villagers. No matter where your physical body was at the time, all can agree that the Vietnam War was a time of turmoil, fear, and uncertainty. No one understood the war but yet, the war dragged on. Although most U.S. Troops were pulled out of Vietnam in 1973, a small number remained until 1975 when President Ford ordered the helicopter evacuations of 7000 Americans and South Vietnamese from Saigon. This is the time just before the evacuations where MISS SAIGON takes place. No matter what your feelings about the Vietnam War, MISS SAIGON is a wonderful interpretation of the many real people who all just wanted to survive and find joy again in their lives.

BWW Review: MISS SAIGON at the Paramount - The Heat is On, but Not All the Way

Dear Readers, I've been a fan of a?oeMiss Saigona?? for years now, ever since it first came out back in 1991. I've seen tours, local productions, revivals on Broadway, and even a one-man interpretation that needs to find new life somewhere. So, I know what I'm looking for in any production; amazing voices and a heart wrenching, tear inducing love story. The current production at the Paramount has the voices but lacked the honesty and realism that would satisfy the love story.

BWW Review: MISS SAIGON is More Than Spectacle - But It Helps

It's probably been quite a while since you've seen Miss Saigon...but if you have, you'll likely recall its extravagant moments most. The vibrantly large sets, huge ensemble number and of course the legendary helicopter.

The heat is on because the national tour of Miss Saigon opened this week at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre!

BWW Review: The Horrific Beauty of MISS SAIGON Returns to Nashville's Tennessee Performing Arts Center

Compellingly dramatic and featuring an exquisitely emphatic score performed by a dazzling cadre of triple-threat actors and a 15-person orchestra, Miss Saigon once again lands at Nashville's Tennessee Performing Arts Center's Andrew Jackson Hall this week for an eight-performance run that will almost certainly stand out among the very best of productions to play Music City during the tenure of departing CEO Kathleen O'Brien. With heart-stopping performances by its trio of stars – Red Concepcion as The Engineer, Emily Bautista as Kim and Anthony Festa as Chris are superb – who are ably supported by a huge company of equally impressive performers, Miss Saigon is at once one of musical theater's most stunning examples, while remaining an enigma among audiences yet to experience its power in person.

When you strip away the beautiful lighting, iconic helicopter, and glowing harmonies, you're left with a musical that has lost its lustre with time.

BWW Review: The U.S. Tour of MISS SAIGON Breathes New Life Into a Classic Musical

Just until this Sunday, March 17th, you can catch well-known Broadway musical Miss Saigon at Wharton Center for the Performing Arts in East Lansing. Inspired heavily by Giacomo Puccini's opera entitled Madama Butterfly, Miss Saigon first played on Broadway from 1991 until 2001 and has had several worldwide productions ever since, including a 2017 Broadway revival. Though this show has often been met with controversy throughout its history, the U.S. national tour currently hitting East Lansing does its best to portray the Vietnam War as honestly as possible.

BWW Review: MISS SAIGON at Rochester Broadway Theatre League

The RBTL continues its 2018-2019 season with one of Broadway's most transporting musicals, equal parts soaring and beautiful and devastatingly sad. Miss Saigon has been wowing audiences for over three decades, and it's here to wow Rochesterians for just four more days.

BWW Interview: Red Concepción of MISS SAIGON Talks Love and Survival in the Midst of War

Regardless of whether or not you're a fan of musicals, you've probably heard of Miss Saigon. This world-famous Broadway classic is coming to East Lansing's Wharton Center for the Performing Arts for just one week from March 12th through 17th. Featuring music and a book from Les Miserables playwrights Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, as well as additional lyrics from Richard Maltby, Jr., Miss Saigon is a story of love and survival towards the end of the Vietnam War. After opening on the West End in 1989, Miss Saigon played to packed houses on Broadway from April 11, 1991 to January 28, 2001. Before the U.S. national tour makes its way to Wharton Center, BroadwayWorld Detroit had a chance to interview Red Concepcion, who plays the Engineer in this production. You can read our interview below.

BWW Review: MISS SAIGON at Shea's Buffalo Theatre

Buffalo audiences are in for a rare treat. The Broadway revival of the hit musical MISS SAIGON soared into town last night in what can only be described as a spectacular evening of theatre. First seen on Broadway in 1991 at the height of the megamusical phenomenon, MISS SAIGON continues to resonate with age. Those familiar with Puccini's opera MADAMA BUTTERFLY will not be disappointed in the updating of the story by composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyricists Richard Maltby and Alain Boubil.

Before you ask, 'Yes, a helicopter lands on stage in the touring production of 'Miss Saigon,' now on stage at the KeyBank State Theatre, but, as with the production itself there is a 'but . . .'.

BWW Interview: MISS SAIGON'S Red Concepción Says this Grittier Version of the Show is Resonating with American Audiences

Red Concepcion grew up listening to show tunes. In fact, he remembers listening to cast albums like MISS SAIGON from the age of five. Fast forward 20 plus years and Concepcion found himself playing the role of The Engineer on the UK tour. He says although he knew the music by heart, he had no idea how big and epic the show was until rehearsals started. And for that five-year-old little boy growing up listening to the soundtrack in the Philippines, working with Claude Michel Schonberg (music), Alain Boublil (lyrics), and ?Richard Maltby, Jr. (lyrics) is a dream come true. 'It's wonderful as an actor to be in such a creative space,' he says. 'They don't write scores like this anymore.'
