Seeing this production's opening night performance which coincided exactly 20 years from Hairspray's Broadway premiere was also a big fat cherry on the top! While some elements of the original version do now feel slightly dated and some of this production's casting choices don't always allow Hairspray's vibrant characters to shine as brightly as one would like, you can't deny that this show is just so much fun. From the moment the show opens with 'Good Morning Baltimore' to the standing ovation worthy finale of 'You Can't Stop The Beat', Hairspray will put a smile on your face and have you dancing in your seat.

Jonathan Larson's small off-Broadway show about love and fear during the AIDS pandemic and has had a phenomenal life- Tony and Pulitzer Awards, running on Broadway for twelve years and seen worldwide in successive tours. Loosely based on Pucinni's La Bohème, the play touches a strong cord among young adults and artists in its portrayal of the incredible fear of death, the joys of new love and the loss of creative spaces. We here in San Francisco can surely empathize with Rent's messages. This spectacular touring cast was embraced heartily by a very youthful audience, who, while not born during the AID crisis, still experience its long-lasting ramifications.

No matter how many times I see this show, Rent always makes me emotional. This time in particular, though, I was very in my feelings. Blame it on the spectacular cast. Blame it on the fresh feeling of theatre being back. Blame it on the show's content.

The show, now on stage for a brief run at ASU's Gammage Auditorium, is, in every respect a compelling and intensely human narrative ~ a mix of exhilaration, wit, and poignancy. One after another of knockout performances bring life to Larson's memorable songs, and a solid gold orchestra, conducted by Matthew DeMaria, brings his music all the way home to the heart.

The 20th Anniversary Tour of 'Rent' has roared onto the stage at the Kansas City Music Hall for a week-long residency through Sunday, May 5.  'Rent,' a rock-opera rendering of Puccini's 'La Boheme,' is not easy stuff.   It is musically challenging and sometimes tough to follow, but it is also undeniably powerful and here performed at the highest possible level.
