Clarke Peters

Clarke Peters began his career in theatre in the early 1970s, working on a Paris production of Hair in 1971 before later starring in the musical. After moving to London in 1973, he performed as a backup singer on recordings including Joan Armatrading's "Love and Affection" (1976) and Heatwave's "Boogie Nights" (1977). His early West End credits include I Gotta Shoe (1976) and Bubbling Brown Sugar (1977). Additional stage credits include Blues in the Night, Porgy and Bess, The Witches of Eastwick, Guys and Dolls, Chicago, and Chess.

Peters made his film debut in Outland (1981) and later appeared in Mona Lisa (1986). In 1990, he wrote the musical revue Five Guys Named Moe, which earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. He later wrote Unforgettable, a musical about Nat King Cole, and starred in the 2010 British production of Five Guys Named Moe.

On Broadway, Peters earned a Theatre World Award for his performance in The Iceman Cometh (1999). He portrayed Billy Flynn in the Broadway revival of Chicago in 2000 and 2003. His regional theatre credits include Driving Miss Daisy, The Wiz, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Carmen Jones, and The Amen Corner. In 2011, he played the title role in Othello at Sheffield Crucible Theatre, and in 2014 portrayed Gloucester in Shakespeare in the Park's production of King Lear.

Peters is widely known for portraying Detective Lester Freamon in HBO's The Wire (2002–2008). His television credits also include The Corner (2000), Damages (2007–2012), Treme (2010–2013), Life on Mars (2008), Holby City, In Plain Sight, and Covert Affairs (2010). From 2012 to 2013, he had a recurring role as Alonzo D. Quinn in Person of Interest.

His film credits include Notting Hill (1999), K-PAX (2001), Freedomland (2006), Marley & Me (2008), Endgame (2009), Nativity! (2009), Red Hook Summer (2012), and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). He also appeared in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Black Betty (1997) and narrated the audiobook of Michael Chabon's Telegraph Avenue (2012).

In 2026, Peters portrayed Art Daniels in the Netflix series The Boroughs.
