The Old Globe will present the 11th annual Powers New Voices Festival, a three-day event of readings of 10 new American plays by emerging and award-winning playwrights writing for the American theatre, including new works by San Diegans.

The Old Globe has announced that due to popular demand there will be a one-week extension for the Globe-commissioned world premiere of Crime and Punishment, A Comedy, written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen and directed by Greenberg. The production, which begins previews on July 15, is now extended through August 20, 2023 only.

Indie folk duo Frances Luke Accord (“FLA”) released their whimsical new song “All The Things.” “Saint Mary” followed album tracks “Window” and “In My Life,” a hopeful ballad and vocal tour de force reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel and Peter, Paul, & Mary which features FLA’s mentors and brethren, Darlingside.

The Old Globe announced today it has received a $2 million gift from Paula and Brian Powers to create the Powers New Works Fund. The gift was made to support new play development at The Old Globe and is in addition to the couple’s previous contributions supporting the organization’s general operating fund and annual Powers New Voices Festival.

Just two days before the opening performance of the American tribal love-rock musical Hair and amid strong demand in tickets, The Old Globe announced a one-week extension of the show due to popular demand. Resident Artist James Vásquez (The Old Globe’s American Mariachi and Tiny Beautiful Things) directs a cast of 16.

The Old Globe's 2017-2018 Season continues with today's announcement of the complete cast and creative team for the Globe-commissioned world premiere of Anna Ziegler's new American play The Wanderers, directed by Barry Edelstein, the Globe's Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director. The Wanderers will run April 6 - May 6, 2018 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. The Old Globe celebrates the world premiere of Jose Cruz Gonzalez's play American Mariachiwith a Virtual Battle of the Mariachi Bands. Starting today, February 2, Southern California mariachi bands can submit a video for the world to see (see below for contest guidelines). Audiences will then be able to vote for their favorite band startingFriday, February 9 at 12:00 noon through Friday, March 16. The first-, second-, and third-prize winners will be announcedMonday, March 19. Only the first 20 eligible videos received will be presented online to the public for voting, so interested bands should act fast!

The Old Globe today announced it will present the fifth annual Powers New Voices Festival, a weekend of readings of new American plays by professional playwrights, playing January 12 14, 2018. The festival will kick off today, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. with Voices of the Community: Celebrating Local Playwrights, an evening of work created by San Diego residents through the Globe's arts engagement initiatives Community Voices and coLAB, and will continue with four readings by some of the most exciting voices writing for the American theatre today. The new American play readings commence on Saturday, January 13 at 4:00 p.m. with Laurel Ollstein's They Promised Her the Moon, directed by Giovanna Sardelli (Somewhere, The Whipping Man at the Globe), followed at 7:30 p.m. by Too Heavy for Your Pocket by Jir h Breon Holder, directed by Patricia McGregor (Globe for All's Measure for Measure).The Festival continues on Sunday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m. with The Tale of Despereaux, with book, music, and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Co. (The Old Man and The Old Moon at the Globe), based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo and the Universal Pictures animated motion picture. The Festival will wrap up that evening at 7:30 p.m. with The Great Leap by Lauren Yee, directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (Globe's Skeleton Crew).
