Interview: Director Ann Hearn Tobolowsky of THE HEIRESS at Theatre 40

The classic 1947 American romantic drama The Heiress was written by real-life spouses Ruth Goetz and Augustus Goetz, based on the novel Washington Square by Henry James. The pair adapted it for the screen in 1949, which was directed by William Wyler, for which Olivia de Havilland won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her starring role as Catherine Sloper. I spoke with director Ann Hearn Tobolowsky about her vision for directing the play at Theatre 40, her choice of actor to portray Catherine Sloper, and how she plans to showcase the character’s emotional growth as the story evolves.
