Alfred Molina began his screen career with roles in the sitcom The Losers (1978) and Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), in which he played Satipo. He gained wider recognition with Letter to Brezhnev (1985) and starred as Kenneth Halliwell in Prick Up Your Ears (1987). In the early 1990s, he led the British television series El C.I.D. and appeared in films including Not Without My Daughter (1991), Enchanted April (1992), A Year in Provence (1993), Maverick (1994), Dead Man (1995), Species (1995), The Perez Family (1995), Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), and Dudley Do-Right (1999). He also starred in the television series Ladies Man (1999–2001).
Molina made his Broadway debut in Yasmina Reza's Art (1998), earning a Tony Award nomination. He later starred on Broadway as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (2004) and as Mark Rothko in Red (2010), receiving Tony nominations for both performances. His stage work also includes The Night of the Iguana and Speed-the-Plow at the Royal National Theatre, and he reprised Red in London's Donmar Warehouse (2009) and the West End (2018).
In the 2000s, Molina appeared in Chocolat (2000), Frida (2002), Luther (2003), Coffee and Cigarettes (2003), Spider-Man 2 (2004), As You Like It (2006), The Da Vinci Code (2006), and voiced Ares in Wonder Woman (2009). He also narrated the audiobook The Chopin Manuscript (2007).
During the 2010s, Molina starred in the BBC sitcom Roger & Val Have Just Got In (2010–2012), joined Law & Order: LA (2010), and portrayed Robert Aldrich in Feud: Bette & Joan (2017), earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
More recently, Molina appeared in The Water Man (2020) and Promising Young Woman (2020), reprised Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and starred as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in the television series Three Pines (2022). He returned to Broadway in Uncle Vanya (2024), narrated Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024), voiced Benjamin Franklin in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of 1776 (2026), voiced Marcellus in the Netflix film Remarkably Bright Creatures (2026), and stars as Sam Cooper in the Netflix series The Boroughs (2026).
