James T. Alfred's one-man show about his childhood in Chicago reels from the outlandish to hilarious to the deeply poignant. Born in 1972, Alfred recalls a time when "the projects" contained a proud black community that was tightly knit and well managed. Alfred lovingly introduces men like Mr. Harris who ran The Center where kids learned to be civically engaged, and Mrs. Brown who took rapscallion children by the ear to their parents' front door. A Brown Tale is a charming and insightful coming of age story in a Chicago enclave before crack decimated the neighborhood.
