Sondheim’s Greatest Hits — Port Washington Play Troupe presents Broadway on Manhasset Bay under the Stars PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The genius of Stephen Sondheim will echo over Manhasset Bay this summer as the Port Washington Play Troupe presents a Sondheim Tribute Revue at the John Philip Sousa Memorial Band shell in Sunset Park/Main Street Port Washington. Audiences can catch this celebration of Broadway brilliance on Saturday, August 23 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, August 24 at 3:00 PM. This is no ordinary concert — it’s an invitation to wrap yourself in a blanket, settle into a chair, sip your favorite beverage, and watch the sun set over beautiful Manhasset Bay while the night fills with some of the most iconic songs in American musical theatre. Admission is free, though a $20 donation is suggested with all contributions directly supporting future Port Washington Play Troupe productions and helping us keep theater accessible to everyone. The evening will weave together a sweeping collection of Sondheim favorites — from the piercing poignancy of Send in the Clowns to the sly wit of A Little Priest, the heart-rending No One Is Alone to the exuberant Comedy Tonight. With selections from Company, Into the Woods, Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, and more, the concert promises to be both a love letter to Sondheim and a feast for Broadway fans. The stage will be graced by an accomplished cast including Candis Alek, Steve Arzt, Jon Brooks, Michael Chimenti, Natalia Cotto, Alexis DiResta, Allison Goldin, Antonia Harvey, Joe Hoffman, Jonathan Hordos, Christina Russo, Rebecca Rutkovsky, Tom Wallace, and Sarah Jane Witchell. At the helm is Director Pamela Seiderman, a seasoned theatre educator and Vice President of Port Washington Play Troupe, whose directing credits span from Shakespeare to Sondheim and beyond. Musical Direction is by David Barnett, a Port Washington native whose career includes Broadway revues in Paris and the Catskills, compositions for television and film, and decades of musical direction for the Play Troupe. Stephen Sondheim’s impact on the American stage cannot be overstated. With intricate lyrics, unexpected themes, and music of unmatched sophistication, he reshaped the very form of the Broadway musical. His works continue to inspire generations, and this concert aims to capture both his brilliance and his heart. The Sondheim Tribute Concert is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI) on behalf of the Estate of Stephen Sondheim. Founded in 1927, the Port Washington Play Troupe is New York State’s oldest community theatre organization, recently delighting audiences with Spark of Creation: Celebrating the Music of Stephen Schwartz, Miracle on 34th Street: A Radio Play, and Past, Present and Future – New 10-Minute Play Festival. As the troupe looks ahead to its centennial in 2027, it invites the community to take part in shaping a celebration worthy of its history.
